When I was younger, when thinking of college, I always thought about the job that would make me the most money. I believed that it wouldn't matter whether the job was boring or not, as long as I got paid well. I remember when my 7th grade teacher told me how he went into teaching because he worked at a bank behind a desk and it was boring to him, he wanted something exciting. I thought he was crazy, but I'm realizing he was right. I realize that when I enter college next year, I have to major in something that I like and have the motivation for, and something that I have strengths for. But, I have no clue what I want.

Personal story aside, for all you college students, how did you know that the major you picked is the one you definetely want? Did you analyze your weaknesses, strengths, motivation, what you would like to do, etc?

did electrical engieering at university with no hesitation at all.was into that stuff since i was a kid.shit was easy cuz i knew alot of the stuff anyways.i enjoyed it.

I'm in the same situation you're in, I have no idea what I wanna do. I'm taking economy now and it's boring me to death, I'm going to fail no doubt. The problem is i don't know what i want to do.

Well often people think it's a trade off. It's either something you enjoy or something that makes you alot of money. But i truly think that you can do something you enjoy whilst getting paid alot for doing it. If you enjoy something, it's not work for you, it simply just doing something you enjoy. If you enjoy doing something and can be apssionate about it then you can be the best at it thus you can infact get paid heaps for it.

I myself however took another route. I know how i am with things so i decided to create an equilibrium. Say i become a professional dancer and i persue that as a career... I know that once i make dancing my life, i'll get sick of it simply because i'll be involved in the politics of it all. There's alot of bitching in the dance scene and it's simply all these instructors and performers that want to get a piece of the pie rather than joining together to make more pie. Thus i decided that i'll study something i'm good at (business information systems: which is a combination of business and IT) and persue a career whilst at the same time i actually do things i enjoy to the fullest.
Then i worked last year and i realised that every night i'd get about an hour sleep since i wouldn't let work get in the way of my social life and i wouldn't let my social life get in my way of work. I was pretty miserable at work because i had no challenges, then i realised that i need jobs that will allow me to have a creative input and a challenge because otherwise i'll do with it like i do with everything else that ends up boring me.... Throwing it aside. So that's when i started my own personal businesses and tried starting up numerous businesses here and there. I realised that i'm jumping into everything too quickly (plus one of my major business ideas had a hole that wouldn't go away) so i decided i should help friends businesses to gain the experience. They trust me with the creative input and i get the jobs done.

oooh i'm getting sidetracked majorly.

Key points
Either do something you enjoy most but be damn good at whatever it is you do
OR
Create an equilibrium between the two... or simply find out what it is you want from a job in the office and try and find it.

I want to get into politics, so i picked economics so i could fully understand how our system works.. I'm going to stray from the path of current politicians (Republicans) and actually know what I'm talking about.

If all works out of course. And I might double in political science.

I appreciate the answers, but I'm looking for y'all to be more specific. Such as, how do you know your major corresponds with your strengths and weaknesses? For example, I'm really temperamental, impatient, and not confident enough to do things where I could make a lil mistake and people would die. Therefore, I am not going to be a doctor. Along those lines.

Sometimes I think fuck strengths and weaknesses - choose something you enjoy. My strengths in my undergraduate degree were Chinese and History. But did I wanna breeze through getting High Distinctions? No, you have to be challenged. It's gotta be more than strengths. Anyway, I ended up doing International Politics - which really interests me, challenges me to think of things bigger than the average person understands, yet shapes our lives in many ways. Then I chose Law - bores the shit out of me, but it will give me many job opportunities, it's a versatile degree with the potential to pay well and ensure a stable career. So that's what I would base it on - opportunities and interests.

I majored in Economics at school. I hated it, thought it was boring as hell, and now im working at an investment bank. I do not like banking either. Any fool off the street who has an overdue copy of Boiler Room will tell you investment banking is "cool" cause you can make "tons of money". Well let me be the first to say I cant stand those people, in fact i hate wanna-be ambitious people with a passion.

10 years from now, their gonna look at their wasted 90 hour work week, their unraveling family, their lack of being able to be a parent, and realize that their lives suck regardless of how much money their pulling in.

At this point in my life, i have realized i would rather be HAPPY and wake up every morning without dreading going into the office all day than make tons of dough. Everyone seems to think in America you work, work, work your life but the money makes it all worthwhile. ITs a culture of emptiness and greed...and in the end noones happy. Im not gonna let myslef become that, and i advise you to do something you enjoy.and major in something youre interested in..otherwise youre not going to be good at whatever it is you do anyways.

In the words of every wanna-be's idol Donald Trump:
"pick something you like, because if youre not doing something you enjoy, you wont be good at it anyways"

Don't ever fall into that trap of 'keeping up with the Joneses'. Don't go down that road. Don't pressurise yourself into having to make a lot of money, just be content and don't complain too much. Complaining makes the issue worse.
Don't be in denial about working life. No matter what you do, there's an element of boredom are monotony about it. Just sometimes there's more boredom in some places than others. Don't 'want' too much. Work for what you need and then everything else above that is a bonus not a neccesity.
But at 17 your still devloping your personality and you will become much more confident and mature in the next 5 years or so, the ideas that your attatched to now and live by now will become redundant and you wont focus on them as much in a few years time, you will learn to be more patient if your not now. becasue you will learn that things only happen with time. don't worry about things too much becasue you at the moment can't deal with certain types of situations or becasue you don't have certain virtues as part of your personality because you will devlop them later.

Remember the story that people say about themselves. that they never wanted to be like their father, but they ended up being like him as they got older. well that shows that people change over time. you will also. you just cant imagine it now.

I used to hate the guy in my street who never used to let us play by his house and would park his car at inconvenient spots in the street when there were other spots availabe. But now I realise that i'm becoming like him :( I thought this could never happen .But I just have to remember to maintain balance and fairness. as long as I give them kids now a little equity, you know, give a little take a little then they shouldn't be too resentful towards me. It's about fairness :)

ou've inspired me,I'm dropping out. Thanks.

Thanks for the advice people, especially Not Really Ken. It's good stuff. However, I just wanted to point out Ken, I have a year before I get into college and that year in college, I have to decide what I want to major in, it's a scholarship thing. So, I technically don't have 5 years to develop, more like 1-2. :)

Also, the thing that bothers me the most is that, I think that if I don't choose a career that pays well and if I don't get paid well in my career, I'll feel like a failure in life. Hopefully, I'll grow out of thinking like that.

I found my way like this. I have always been a keen and good sportsman so that made me decide to take sports science at college which left me with a broad range of subjects to major in, then while on that diploma I found that I liked physiotherapy the most and it also had excellent career opportunities.

so basically find an area that you like e.g sports, politics etc. and then take a subject in that which has a broad further education opprtunities at the end of it. Then while your at college you'll find a specific area that is most rewarding for you, so then make that your major at uni :-)

First off...I didnt want to go to college. I had no plans on further education after High School. But my mom said go to school or pay rent so I said fuck it - since at the time I had a shitty job and no motivation for a new one, but thats a different story. Anyways from there I decided what I wanted to do...I didnt enjoy graphic design really anymore so I pretty much let my skills slip and didnt wanna go back in2 that...I figured since I love writing/English, and 4 some reason I've always wanted 2 be a teacher, so I decided I'd go in2 that...High School area since I think that'd be the funnest and Id have the most leeway with things like cussing and shit [i have a lil control problem lol. But now I've decided to gear myself more towards studio production and shit thatll help my music...so I can kill 2 birds with 1 stone. :)

Basically what I analyzed when I made the decision both times was interests, desireability [jobs available and whatnot]...and I think thats it. Dunno Im tired as fuck and high so my brains not working yet. But I think U get the picture.
