I am seriously considering purchasing this car. I'm 22, fresh out of college (UC Irvine), and I think I want a car that is fun that I can enjoy while I'm young, then maybe I'll trade up for a more luxury-oriented car later on in life. Any thoughts?

Bloke I work with has 1. He loves it.

It's very fast. I used to have a 330 bhp Impreza. As a passenger in his MR340 I thought it was much faster. He was doing 140mph before I knew it.

Good fun, but maybe not something you want to use everyday.
That's one thing I've been considering. A lot of people say that the Subaru Impreza WRX STi is a better daily driver in terms of comfort, but with that ugly-ass 2006 model, I am definitely not considering it anymore. But I don't think the ride will bother me that much, since in my younger days I used to drive a fixed-up Honda Accord coupe with stiff-ass coilovers. I've test-driven the Evo IX once (just over city streets though), and it didn't seem to bother me that much. Hopefully I won't get too far below the 19 city/25 highway mpg that Mitsubishi claims in my daily driving.

I wouldnt get the Prezza either. Far too 00gly :D. But the Evo is high maintainance. 300+ hp out of a 2 liter is pushing it. But if a bit of looking after doesn't phase you, by all means go for it. "hecka fun"

I think it's just as high maintenance as the STi or any other performance car with similar numbers, yet probably still cheaper to maintain than the Porsches that it can outpace. But remember, the U.S.-spec Evo IXs are rated at 286 hp (even though it's slightly underrated based on numerous dyno results) but probably still comfortably below "300+ hp."

I used my Impreza as a daily driver. No problems, never had a fault. But I agree it is damn ugly now.

My workmate uses his Evo MR340 every day and has no problems. It's Japanese they don't go wrong. But they do need servicing every 6 months / 6000 miles. Apart from that they don't cost much. MPG is reasonable, Tyres last, parts are good, reliability is shit hot. It's just servicing and insurance. But still cheaper than a 911.

However I would never buy 1, I think they're too much for a daily driver, and not enough to keep for a weekend car. They're just in the middle. But if you're looking at a "Jap Supercar", The mitzi is the 1 I'd choose.

Congratulations.
By the way you'll beat STi's if you are a good driver, you are like 0.1 fast in 0-60 and the same for quarter mile I believe, haha, but nice have fun.

The cars are so evenly matched that you won't notice the difference. 0.1 is nothing.

However the Mitzi's are more tuneable.

Here are some pictures of my graphite gray Evo IX yesterday, the day after I bought it:

Unfortunately it rained five hours later, but it gave me a chance to have fun with the AWD and play with the ACD (Active Center Differential) settings :thumb:

Post up some pics...How much was it?
Just so you know, MSRP is $31,399 + $595 destination charge... I got it for $28,599 with destination already included :) Then add your usual tax, title and licensing fees and it gets to a bit over $30k.

I will most definitely beat an STi, since the two cars have always been pretty evenly matched in terms of acceleration since the Evo was released in the U.S. in 2003, but the Evo has had two slight performance revisions since then, first in 2005 when ACD was added and hp and torque went up to 276 and 286, then again in 2006 when hp and torque went up to 286 and 289, while the STi's changes have been minor (addition of yaw sensor in 2005, wider rear track, and DCCD torque split change from 35/65 to 41/59 or something in 2006 and lighter suspension components). The addition of MIVEC (Mitsubishi's version of variable valve timing) spices up the low-end torque significantly. A friend of mine has a stock 2004 STi, and I'll probably race him from a roll since we'd both have the advantage of an AWD launch, making it irrelevant to put our transmissions and clutches through such abuse.

And I certainly am a good driver. I'm no expert and by no means in the upper echelon of street drivers, but ever since I was 16 I really tried to understand the proper ways of driving a manual transmission car and experimented with them... double-clutching, rev-matching, heel-toeing (which is ridiculously easy in this car in comparison to the Civics and Preludes that I taught myself on), etc.

Kind of true... but edmunds.com says that the power delivery of the Evo IX is much better. Although the Evos are a lot more responsive to mods, I plan on leaving it stock for a while. There have been a lot of warranty denials due to simple mods, so I'd rather not risk losing the 10-year/100,000 powertrain warranty, among the others.

get a VW. Fuck Asian cars.
Riiiight... drive a chick car :p

But on a serious note, I was really considering a 2006 VW Golf GTI and probably would've ended up getting one if they had come out sooner (since I didn't realize that I could afford an Evo IX until within the past month or two). I test drove a GTI equipped with the DSG transmission. It's pretty awesome, since it shifts faster than 99% of the human population, automatically blips the throttle when downshifting, and is truly both automatic and manual. However, I didn't like the fact that automatic was always the default mode, and as a result it would upshift on its own rather than letting me have full control on certain types of driving. I don't know if there was a way to bypass it, but the salesman didn't know, so that was the experience I left with.
