Old School Rap: For people age 25 and up

#1
I was just going through some old tapes that I haven't listened to in probably 10-13 years. I'm going to be 28 in March and I grew up with all the 80's rap acts. Run DMC, Beastie Boys, Fat Boys, Fresh Prince, MC Hammer, Young MC, Public Enemy...the list goes on. For those of you who are my age or older, what 80's rap acts had the most impact on your life? I mean, what act(s) made you look at things differently, what acts made you like different kinds of rap music? What artists did you emulate?

For me it was all about Fat Boys, Fresh Prince, DMC and Young MC mostly. I had BB tapes and PE tapes, but the aforementioed names in the first sentence were the acts that REALLY made me decide that I loved rap music over anything else.

Some of my favorite 80's rap songs included:
Jellyroll -Fat Boys
My Adidas -DMC
Walk This Way -DMC ft. Aerosmith
Mary Mary -DMC
Beats To The Rhyme -DMC
Pricipals Office -Young MC
Fastest Rhyme -Young MC
Jailhouse Rap -Fat Boys
Wipe Out -Fat Boys

These were some of my faves. I was 3-13 from 1980-1990, so I wasn't really really into the political stuff like the PE's. I mean, I listened to them and I thought acts like that were the shit, but I never really listened deeply to the lyrics cuz I was a kid.

What's some of y'alls faves?

Rakim, Kool G Rap, Herc, Big Daddy Kane, Whodini, Kool Keith, BDP, LL. Thats who i was mainly listenin too, my older brother listened to "friends" everyday i think, got annoying as hell. Run-DMC was in everyone tape deck though. Young MC had that nice ass flow, always loving him. FAT BOYYSSSSS, man thats a calssic song right there. PE is laways a must, but you brought up a good point about the age.

I'd say break down rap into the eras. ALthough you can break it down a lot lot more.
80's-early early 90's
90's-to i'd say about 98
then from 98 and so on.
What do you think you listen to most.

Yeah, Young MC, Fat Boys, Fresh Prince...they were the ones that I listened to most. I remember I was in 8th grade in 1990 and we had to do a report on our favorite musician. I decided to do mine on Young MC and in the speech, we had to read the lyrics from our favorite song. I think I picked "Principal's Office". I remember getting laughed at because I was literally the only person in my class who listened to rap music and everyone else thought rap music was horrible.

For the past 5 years most of the rap I listen to has been the stuff that came out of 1990-96, actually, with some 80s' shit thrown in. The Chronic, Doggystyle, MATW, AEOM, Makaveli, Warren G's shit, Young MC, Fat Boys and DMC.

I really need to go back and get some old albums that I lost from the 80's.

i can honestly say that i learned more about black history from public enemy than i did in any book in school so i would say PE had the biggest impact on me out of all the old rap acts. i am about the same, i have been listening since about when the fat boys first started but i didn't really get hooked on rap until i bought straight outta compton when i was a sophmore in high school but since then i have been an addict.

well how he 28 and doesnt know what hiphop/rap is ?Plus never heard illmatic?
You don't pay attention. I listened to Illmatic when it first dropped, didn't like it.

I appreciate it now, though.

Stop riding Nas' dick. Illmatic is not the only rap CD in the world.

OK, since I am unemployed and looking for a job, I have no money. My sister heard me talking on Wednesday about the fact that I wanted to peep out The Documentary and Illmatic but didn't really want to buy them because I didn't know if I'd like them. Thursday, my sister comes home and gives me both albums.

So I popped Illmatic and I still didn't like it AT ALL. Upon the first listen, I was like "this shit is boring, bad beats and some are mediocre at best and Nas' voice is boring as well.

Upon the second listen, I started to like "Life's A Bitch". The beat is good for it and I was REALLY impressed with AZ. Don't know why, but I don't think I've ever heard AZ and if I have I don't remember. I really liked him.

third, fourth, fifth, sixth shot went buy. Yep, listened to it SIX different times...STILL didnt' like it.

LOL, this shit is funny. Popped about 5 roxycontin, smoked a joint, popped Illmatic in...and I liked it. Liked it a lot actually. Now..I don't know if I'll feel the same when Im sober tomorrow morning, but right now I'm high as fuck and diggin Illmatic.

The songs that stand out most to me are:
Represent
One Time 4 Your Mind
It Ain't Hard To Tell
Memorly Lane

The rest of the songs are good too, but the ones I listed above are the ones that I think will end up being my faves, and in the order I listed them.
Oh oh oh but you heard it when it 1st dropped? by the way did you read bank robbers sig? You know one of the posters you respect so much.
