So, I posted my resume on careerbuilder.com like yesterday. Since then, I've gotten three phone calls and five e-mails about potential job opportunities. One of the e-mails was actually from Careerbuilder.com for an inside sales position.

Now, i've done some cross selling before but never cold sales and i'm kind of wary about it, especially since the unit I would be in would be selling to companies in Kentucky and Ohio.

The base pay would only be like $25K but I'd get commission and bonuses based off my sales.

Now here's where I'm confused. I'm used to making a lot more than roughly $12 an hour. But if the selling goes well with all the bonuses and whatnot I could probably make up to like $45K which is what is supposedly average for the inside sales department.

Or I can take a job where I know i'll start off with like $17.50 per hour.

However, careerbuilder.com offers full tuition reimbursement for any class I take and get an A or B. Plus the other benefits are great.

The only reason I"m seriously considering this is the tuition reimbursement. Most companies will not pay for everything and I do not get any financial aid.

So, what should I do?

Take a job paying more and try to take out loans for school?

Or

Take the job paying less with the opportunity to make more and have my education paid for.

Help Please.

Serious Responses only please.

Thanks please

LOL

Cold selling sucks, PLus I hang up on people most the time that cold call me.

I would take the 18 an hour atleast then u know u can pay ur bills and school loans. What if u dont have a good sales month...woo my bills dont get paid but my school does.....u can put school loans on hold if u run into financial problems.

That's true too... but they're saying that we're only calling businesses during business hours and speaking with the hiring manager or HR department. Do you think that will make much of a difference? We wouldn't be calling anyone's home. If we were, I wouldn't have even considered it.

sales jobs are still tough though, and even though you aren't calling people at home, there's still no way to guarantee you won't end up having a bad month like Sicc mentioned and getting stuck. i think you should take the other job. even though loans are a pain in the ass, like he pointed out, you can put them on hold. you can't do that with your bills.

I agree with Sicc and Devious, you never know when you might have a bad sales month. At least with the 17.50 one you know how much you're gonna be making and can plan for stuff.

That's what I was thinking too...but... I wouldn't only be getting paid commission. I'd also make the base of 25K per year. Which is like $12 an hour or so. Also, I'd have a set schedule for hours, no weekends, and it's careerbuilder.com. That's a huge company that can lead to many other opportunities becoming available.

I don't know. I have a week to decide :(

yeah, but as you pointed out, you are used to making a lot more than $12 an hour, so are you willing to make the sacrifices you would have to make if you do have a bad month? i know you like to shop, are you willing to cut out spending on that kind of stuff in order to cover other expenses? there are a lot of things to think about when it comes to taking less money for a job than what you're accustomed to.

he has a point.

This is a no brainer, if you consider yourself smart and are willing to work to get good grades, take the job at careerbuilder, if it doesn't work out in the long run, at least you had schoolage (THAT WAS FREE!) to help you find a better job in the future...

Take the job that pays less with the opportunity to make more and have your education paid for because it will help you in the long run when it comes to paying off debt for school.

^but what about if she has a bad sales month. bills dont get paid by themselves.

Weather she makes the bonus or not, she will have enough to pay bills and other living costs because she is still making an annual base salary of $25,000, and since the company will pay for some of her education it will better her because she will end up in saving money in the long run from not having to pay the full amount of school fee's.

but you're not taking into account that she's used to making quite a bit more than 25k, so that means she will have to make sacrifices and change her spending habits, possibly even the quality of life she's used to. if she's willing to do that, then that's great, but she has to ask herself if she is willing to make these sacrifices when it comes down to it.

That's true but I only have two more semesters to go in school, roughly, to finish my bachelors. The only reason i'm not graduating now like I should be is because I ran out of financial aid and my scholarships didn't cover my full tuition costs :( I should be able to pay my bills and shop a bit on that salary along without anything extra.... just not at Coach and Neiman Marcus, lol. I've considered that as well though now i'm just bouncing ideas off of people here as well as my friends in person.

That's EXACTLY what I was thinking. Plus it's careerbuilder.com, that's going to look great on a resume as work experience. Plus, i'm an international business major and i'm almost done with my degree. Careerbuilder does have an international department. I could very possibly finish my degree and transfer departments after i'm done.

That's true, I will have enough to survive on even if I don't sale anything at all. And I think i'd definitely save money because if I was paying for my class i'd be spending probably about $1300+ per class.... But in the long run I'll be worth more with my Bachelors as opposed to just an ABA.

But it is $18...now...

I'm soo confused :(

Go for the careerbuilder.com job. If it covers all your basic expenses even in a bad month and you´ll graduate in two semsters it´s a no-brainer to me. You never know which opportunities present themselves to you in a big company like that.

I'm very apprehensive to cold calling jobs. I used to be a telemarketer, and the pressure was pretty intense. I had low morale, because I knew the product I was trying to sell was a complete scam. This is how it worked.

It was for some Mathematics tutorial program which worked on the PC. Basically, the product cost roughly 7000 dollars, which in my eyes (for a computer program anyway) is complete and utter shit. Not only that, but the areas we targetted were areas which were less educated, and thus people who were more vulnerable and susceptible to these sorts of things.

When I prompted my boss on why we never called higher class areas (which, to my logic, made sense because as they have more money to burn, they would be more inclined to buy into something costing this much), she brushed me off by saying "oh they're snobs." Because she was immensely attractive and I fantasised about boning her while i dialled the phones, I didn't probe her more on the issue. I just accepted that the reality was those sorts of areas were more educated and would thus tell me to fuck off once i tried to persuade them that investing in a 7000 dollar computer program was the way to success for their child.

I got paid good, roughly $17 an hour, which was great for me because I was fresh out of high school. But, I had no faith in the product I was trying to sell, which really added to my failure in the job. I was constantly pushed by my boss, constantly hassled, threatened - I had ultimatums thrown at me very frequently. Often she'd pull me into her office, which was a step in the right direction for my fantasies, but those thoughts quickly subsided as she sat on her chair, crossed her arms and legs and forcefully asked "what's wrong, why can't you make any sales?". At that point, i didn't give a fuck because I was so disheartened about what i was doign, so I responded by shrugging and telling her I didn't know.

The point is, I hated what i was doing cos i had absolutely no faith in what I was trying to sell. And it seemed so dodgy to me - im trying to persuade poor people to cough up 7 G's for some shitty product. I had no morale, no enthusiasm, and no desire to support the product, and this reflected in my poor sales.

I agree. You know about the possibility of a bad month, so u just gotta be prepared and cut down costs if u need it. After all, we are only talkin about 2 semester, one year. After they payed for your education u can easly leave, tryin to make more money somewhere else so ..... yes if u like that job (I dunno) and are able 2 live with the 25k, it could be a nice chance, don't u agree?

well it seems like you have your mind almost made up already, my only advice is not to take our advice. i can understand why you're asking for it, but you're the one who has to live with the decision you make, not us. if you're willing to make the sacrifices you may have to make, take the careerbuilder job and get your school paid for. but don't take any of our words for it, it's your life and your decision.
