American Beauty

After I watched Wes Bentley's character videotape a bag swirling in midair amongst the leaves for a good 5 minutes I realized that everything has the potential to be beautiful. I've seen been finding beauty in the most mundane things and now I really enjoy the simpler parts of life.

Me and You and Everyone We Know

What is soo original about this movie is how captivating every scene is. In most films there are certain scenes here and there that stick out and get embedded in your memory, such as a death of a character, an emotional breakdown by an actor, or an argument between characters. But here there are no boring parts; from start to finish your riveted by every act.

Again, there's so much meaning assigned to everything and I love to find that kind of respect for life in such a glamorized media such as cinema. Like the scene where they maneuver their vehicles just to make sure the goldfish's life is not ended so brutally is especially moving.

And beautiful.

Twister and Independence Day.
Nothing special about them at all but I was blown away by the two movies (ID4 more so). I'm sure other people would pick movies like Star Wars or Jurassic Park or something like that but Twister and Independence Day were the movies that opened a window into the whole CGI world and made me want to pursue a career in that field. The thought of using computers and creating something that look out of this world and so real turned me on like no other. Unfortunately, I dropped out before I reached my goal but I really think those two movies molded me into who am I today.

Those are the biggest.

I think a well made movie could change you in different ways, maybe you don't notice it right away but if the message you got is real and if it stays with you, I think it would change your life.
I love movies that haunt me. Movies that make me forget that I'm watching a movie. The feeling I get when I leave the threater, it feels like I'm still in that movie world. I go home and I can't stop thinking about the movie I just saw.... I LOVE THAT FEELING.

Jurassic Park changed my life. After seeing it, I took up zoology and now I'm taking care of baby dinosaurs. And Star Wars inspired me to one day become a diplomat to other planets and try to end the war between the Ceylons and the Klingons.

"requiem for a dream" did something to me after watching. but i could never really place my finger on it.
Requiem for a Dream didn't change my life but it haunted me afterwards, it didn't leave my mind for a couple of days.

Another one I thought of is Mission Impossible. I went out and bought my first PowerBook after seeing it. That's right, Tom Cruise and De Palma turned me into a Mac nerd.

I don't think any movie changed my life, this list has changed my thoughts views on other aspects.

Donnie Darko - this just blew me away, and the dialogue and presentation was terrific.

Donnie "Why Are You Wearing That Stupid Rabbit Suit?"

Frank: "Why Are You Wearing That Stupid Man Suit?"

a truly original film, butterfly effect is really a similar film to this but Donnie Darko is executed better.

Requiem For A Dream: This was a hard hitting film for me, how are these characters start out on trying to better themselves (Harry, Tyrone and Marion trying to make some money, Harry's Mom trying to fit in her red dress) and in doing that it's goes awry and in the end their lives are in ruin and you see what addiciton can do to you.

American History X: Very powerful I think Edward Norton's best performance, and probably Edward Furlong's best performance (and that's saying alot). This film didn't open my eyes to anything, cause I already knew this is what goes on every minute of every day, but I'm sure White America was stunned.

Fight Club: there's probably 3 films that changed the landscape of films in the 90's the 3 in no order Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs and Fight Club. I was a little dissapointed with the twist, but man this is just a special film, great dialgoue, acting, directing everyhting was great. You know that feeling when you watch a movie for the first time and think "hey this is something that's really blowing my mind." this is one of those.

Jurassic Park: Just on the fact of CGI alone but I also give it up to Star Wars too. when I saw this in the theaters and first saw the brontisaurs (or how ever you spell it) I was stunned, that was amazing.

Fight Club

See at first I went to see this flick assuming it was just a brash violent mess - or perhaps a popcorn flick.

But it turned out to be a movie that had more levels than i have time to write about .

first angle is the social dynamic that men are catogorized in. Women have joy luck club and steel magnolias and all that crap that have women relate to what it means to be 'female'. Fight club echos the foundation of what men long for - being an alpha male seperate from labels, jobs, social rank / status. This aspect alone brings me back to a place when I watch it ( which I do annually privately and read the book) that releases me from trying to be who the media is molding me to be and just be my self.

Also as I just mentioned the movie / book lashes back at the media and it's prospective of what a 'man' is supposed to be-and contradicts those images.

also without giving away the whole thing as far as the 'twist' ending goes, the charactors spoke directly to me. one charactor that is a work o holic and wants everything tready and another that is anitsocial and against the grain - which speaks about the issues that we as people go through daily - who we are and who we'd LIKE to be...

so after wards i looked at some things and said fuck it
