Missy Elliott & Adidas sued by charity

A charity called Break The Cycle is suing Adidas over the product line launched in conjunction with Missy Elliott. The charity filed a $10 million lawsuit in Manhattan on March 16th claiming that the clothing line titled, ‘Respect ME’, is a copyright infringement of its name and logo.

The partnership between Elliott and Adidas is only the second of its kind, with only Run DMC signing a similar deal previously. The collaboration was launched in 2004 with over forty products in the ‘Respect ME’ brand.

Break The Cycle is a charity Missy Elliott was once a spokesperson for which aims to prevent and ultimately stop domestic violence. The organization also claims Elliott and Adidas would donate a percentage of profits to aid their cause, yet no money has been received.

Adidas collaborated with Elliott to tap into the elusive female sports market which Nike currently has a stranglehold over. Adidas also bought out Reebok earlier this year in an effort to compete with its rival.
