You know when youre on 4th gear, and decide to drop it down to 3rd and then 2nd and then brake? When you drop gears to use your engine brakes, does that fuck up your car in any way? I do it all the time and i was just wondering

PEACE!

it's good practice to downshift. just make sure you let off the clutch gently so you don't overrev your engine when doing so.

there are many advantages to downshifting; it extends your brake life, it's a good way to slow down around traffic cops, excellent for coming out of turns, and you can avoid getting hit from behind.

safe riding.

What my Drivers Ed teacher told me in High School is that you only use the down shift method on down-hills. Using it on flat land is bad for your clutch or engine. I don't really remember. It's one and or the other.

ya man...i use it for all that shit...but it doesnt fuck up your engine?

If you brake and downshift properly (heel-and-toe) and your rev-matching is good, it should not put any extra stresses on the clutch or tranny at all. It is only if you are not matching the revs properly that you will get extra wear and tear. If done properly it should be perfectly smooth.

spoons is right.

If you dont know how to do it properly you could fuck something up but its good to learn if you drive in the wet or snow or something. Your brakes wont lock up if you do it and you wont skid.

You do burn more petrol though.

It's called engine breaking.

It put's extra stress on your engine just like it does if you rev up to 7000 rpm. As long as you don't shift down at stupid speeds you'll have no problems at all.

Also, careful doing it around the corner, if you dump it in third or second and floor it while going around the corner you will get a nice slide going.

Hell Yeah.

That's what roundabouts are for. Nice arse out action.

Haha the other week I saw an R32 skyline try it and almost lose it going around and ass swipe a bunch of parked cars on the side of the road. Missed them by half a meter.

I used to love doing it when I had a rear wheel drive car, down shift around the corner, tap the break, slide, shift up and out of the slide.

At no time at all do you want to down shift in snow or any condition that your tires will spin, cus that is exactly what will happen, your tires will spin and you lsoe control. Your brakes only lock up in the snow if you just push them as hard as you can, ease into braking in the snow. Driving in the snow is like 4 wheeling, you want low RPM's. Down shifting does the exact opposite.
