Man faces 40 felony counts after chase, deadly crash

A Harvey man was charged late Sunday with 40 felonies, including first-degree murder and drunken driving, hours after he allegedly assaulted a Calumet City cop, stole a Chevy and led police on a chase that ended in a fatal collision.

Killed in the crash was America Rodriguez, 24, of Blue Island.

Rodriguez was on her way home from work early Sunday when the accident occurred at Sibley and Cottage Grove in Dolton, said Calumet City Police Sgt. Kevin Glaser.

With six police squads -- four from Calumet City and two from Burnham -- in pursuit, Glaser said a 1990 Chevrolet Caprice, stolen moments before the crash, was going about 70 mph when it ran a red light at the intersection.

Seven people were injured. Rodriguez was pronounced dead at St. James Hospital and Health Center in Olympia Fields.

Authorities threw the book at the Caprice's driver, Seneca D. Allen, 21, of the 14700 block of Honore, Harvey. The 40 felony charges he faces include seven counts of felony murder, aggravated battery to a police officer and 14 counts of aggravated driving under the influence, Glaser said. He is to appear today in court at 9 a.m. in Markham.

Although the fatal crash allegedly occurred with Allen trying to elude police, Glaser defended the decision by his officers not to call off the chase. A preliminary investigation showed no wrongdoing by his department, he said.

Cop injured in fight

"We mirror state law in that we pursue forcible felonies, which this was," Glaser said. "This was an aggravated battery to a police officer."

That alleged crime took place after police arrived at 12:36 a.m. at Castaways Bowling Alley, 1025 Sibley, Calumet City, to break up a fight in the parking lot. Allen, who police say was intoxicated, tried to run away when the police showed, and an officer was injured when he and Allen began to fight in an adjacent lot, authorities said.

Glaser said Allen escaped the officer, who injured his knee in the fight, then forced his way into the Caprice as it left the bowling alley's parking lot. As Allen drove west on Sibley with police behind him, Glaser said, the Chevrolet's four other passengers may have fought with him. Glaser said the altercation inside the car did not cause the accident.
