It's sorta been explained. They were used in Dharma experiments. More specifically, they tested to see how the bears would adapt to a different environment.

Nice little piece of episode title "spoiler":

Finale of season five will be called "The Incident" in two parts. Those who remember anything from season two might remember "the incident" being referred to as the cause of having to push the button every 108 minutes.

What did you think about seasons 4 and 5 so far compared to what you remember in 1-3?

I think the last episode redeemed Kate's utterly sucky character. When she told Sawyer she didn't know why the others came back, she only knew why she came back, I thought it was because of Sawyer and got sorta disappointed that that's all they could muster. But in this latest episode, her actions made more sense. And she didn't suck as much I thought. One of the later scenes where Kate confronts Claire's mom, was a rly good scene imo.

I felt the season was moving away from real strong character/relationship development and was rushing to put all the mysteries into perspective. I know that's how it has to be since the writers said that everything would be answered by end of season 6 but what really got me into Lost was the relationships between the characters and not the back story of the mystery of the island.
