Non-Urban Music Limp Bizkit - Gold Cobra (previews of new album)

I was listening to the album yesterday in work and its pretty fucking awesome (except for a few cringeworthy lyrics). I was busy working when it was on and cant wait to give it a proper listen. Get A Life is the track that stood out the most for me.

"Significant Other" and "Chocolate Starfish..." are two of the best contemporary rock albums of modern times. I remember the day "Take A Look Around" premiered on radio, it was the ONLY thing anybody wanted to talk about at my school the next day. And when the album dropped, EVERYONE bought it, which was unheard of.

They bridged the rap-rock divide more so than ANY other band, even their nu-metal contemporaries like KoRn and Linkin Park. That's why that album sold 12 million records. Not many artists, especially in the rap or rock genres were pushing those numbers at that time. And it's a brilliant album. They lost their way after that album, because Wes left, but I'm not ashamed at all to be an LB fan.

Not all music has to be intellectual. LB deserve props for creating the most cohesive rap/rock fusion out of all of their peers.

I think that depends on how much you like Limp Bizkit, plus the fact that the rock scene is so much different now to ten years ago (when nu-metal was all the rage). I think, in a different climate, "Shotgun", "Douchebag", "Gold Cobra" and "Why Try" could have been pop hits, but it's not where the market is at right now. Same with hip-hop, you come out now sounding like what was popular in 2001 and it's unlikely to be a hit. And all the bands of that era who are even still going suffer from that. Korn had some of the best albums of their career (IMO) in the last 5 years and they struggle to get the kind of exposure that had in the late 90's and early 00's. Linkin Park switched up their whole sound on the last two albums in a desperate attempt to try and move with the times. I'm actually glad Bizkit didn't do that. There's still demand for RATM as a live act but no hint of them even trying to record new material. System of A Down broke up......Blink 182 just reformed but it remains to be seen whether they can have a pop hit the way they used to.....

I'm trying to think of bands from a decade ago that are still relevant to the point where they could do that. Having a pop hit isn't just about a great commercial song that's catchy and everyone likes, it's about the sound of the market as well.

Rock is actually barely relevant in a pop context in the current market place. Example - Red Hot Chilli Peppers new single "The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie" is #1 on the Billboard Rock Chart right now. Where is it on the Billboard Hot 100 (aka the main, pop chart)? #66. I think that says it all.
