(1010 WINS) (NEW YORK) Investigators following a trail of cleanly cut body parts suspect the victim was dismembered by someone with a background in medicine, officials said Friday.
A section of torso believed to be that of the 19-year-old Brooklyn man turned up late Thursday at a recycling plant in the Greenpoint section. It was the third discovery of partial remains in the past week.
The dismemberment showed such precision, investigators believe "it may have been done by someone with some medical knowledge, or certainly anatomical knowledge," said Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly.
The victim, Rashawn Brazell, was last seen by his family leaving his home on the morning of Feb. 14. Police believe he may have arranged a date with another man, possibly over the Internet.
On Feb. 17, a transit worker doing a routine track inspection on the A line found severed legs and an arm in a plastic bag in a tunnel near the Nostrand Avenue station.
Workers discovered a partial human torso in a similar bag on Wednesday at the recycling plant, which processes garbage from the subway system. A second section of the same torso was found on Thursday, also in a bag, police said.
Brazell was identified through fingerprints. The medical examiner had not determined a cause of death.
