What is it with hip-hop and accents?

Take for instance in Australia, where it is looked down upon to have anything other than a strong aussie accent that shows....Rukas will know what I mean, he gets criticised for "faking" his non-Australian style. lol.

Whereas I tend to think hip-hop sounds strange with anything but an American accent because that is what it is so often associated with.

What are other peoples thoughts?

Not really no, I dont know, I can even tell. lol. But you see people on this board when they comment in the drop zone saying stuff like - not liking the lack of an aussie accent. As if that is what you need to be an "authentic" artist here.

Perhaps it is just a bit of egoism of Aussie hip-hop... I dont know.

Well, if you speak in an Aussie accent, I expect you not to rap in a fake voice. In Rukas's case though, he dosn't have an Aussie accent.
Personally, I don't care music-wise, but if an Aussie raps in an American accent then my opinions of him as a person wont be good. It is like trying to be something his not.
I've always wondered this, if people from Europe cant stand Aussie accents, because I sure as hell can't stand European accents in a Hip Hop song. Annoys the fuck out of me..

I personally love hearing hip-hop in a 'UK' accent. It's whatever you are used to haring sounds good, you get used to it and understand it. US hip-hop, and their accent in general has been put around the world so often, so we recognise it as easy as we can recognise one closer to home. Australian accents do sound abit wierd to me, but I know if I listen to alot of Oz hip-hop, I probably won't even emmediately recognise any difference in the accent on the track.

i think its unique to have an accent, i mean as long as u can flow and shit, but whever its from austrialia, uk, or whatever, u can always notice the talent on good artists.

ps, i checked rukas out before, and he's decent

my friends got that asian thing going but when he rhymes it funny but really fuckin good and its pretty unique so i guess it just depends.

Honestly, I hate accents in rap songs. Some songs in the drop zone when i try to listen them, if i hear the accent i just close the player. It just doesn't feel right.

Yeah I can understand that. When I hear some of the real strong australian accents (cant think of an example right now), it does sound .... odd. Yet, the artists here are so proud of it, lol. Oh yeah, you probably heard some of Hyjak's stuff in the Drop Zone, shit, did he have a strong accent! Wonder whatever happened to him.

So the American accent is the way English is supposed to be spoken? Fuck off.

That's clearly not what he meant. We are so accustomed to hearing rap with an American accent, it is nothing to do with which is the proper accent of speech.

imo if you've got an accent when you talk, it shouldn't just disappear when you rap. like someone already said, its like your trying to be something your not.

rather than trying not to use your regular accent cos you feel it might make some listeners ignore your shit, you should use it in a way that is going to get positive attention and cause you to be unique.

That's English accents you mean and I agree they're terrible. Check out someone like Cabo though (he's Irish and a part of Napolean's crew) much much better ;)
