Blu-ray.com - George Lucas Announces Star Wars Blu-ray for 2011

..George Lucas himself announced today that the Star Wars films will be released on Blu-ray in 2011, in a six-movie box set. Speaking at the Celebration V convention in Orlando, Lucas said: "I wish I could say it was coming out this year, but it will come out next year." New, extensive special features will be featured, including documentaries, vintage behind-the-scenes moments, interviews, retrospectives and never-before-seen footage from the Lucasfilm archives.

"Blu-ray is the absolute best way to experience Star Wars at home – in pristine high definition," said George Lucas. "The films have never looked or sounded better."

In an interview with the New York Times, Lucas said that the saga hadn't been announced before because he was waiting for mass adoption of the Blu-ray format. "We've been wanting to do it as soon as we possibly could, but we just wanted to do it when enough people would be able to buy it and see it," said the filmmaker.

Lucas also clarified that the original trilogy movies will be included as they were shown theatrically in 1997 and released on DVD in 2004 - i.e., the original versions will not be included. "You have to go through and do a whole restoration on it, and you have to do that digitally," he said. "It's a very, very expensive process to do it. So when we did the transfer to digital, we only transferred really the upgraded version."

FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU!!!!!!!!! No one gives a flying fuck about your fuckin special editions Lucas! GOD DAMMIT!!! I swear give us at least anamorphic versions of the original trilogy you fat bastard! I dont understand why he keeps trying to shove these shitty fuckin special editions down our fuckin throats. Fuck this i've been waiting so long for this to hit blu but fuck if im gonna buy them if they are only the shit fuck special editions of the movies.

What's the difference? Legitimate question. I have only seen 2 of the original trilogy and I have no idea whether I saw them the way they were originally made or after whatever they did in 1997 that the article alludes to. I don't care enough about Star Wars to know what was done to the movies.

I'm guessing maybe CGI added, like the re-release of "The Exorcist"?

I have not watched a single Star Wars film, Lord of the Rings film, or a Harry Potter film. I'm proud of myself.

I can understand not watching Star Wars and Harry Potter but Lord Of The Rings?? C'mon that shit is quality entertainment

I've seen 3 Star Wars films, but only 1 LOTRs, and no Harry Potter ones. But more importantly, I haven't even read a Harry Potter book or The Lord of the Rings. Imagine how proud I feel.

I haven't seen any Harry Potter films, in addition, I get great satisfaction when I make fun of people who think the books are classic reads and some of the best books ever written.
If there was a paid position to shit talk Harry Potter; I'd be rich by now.

i'm not bothering with harry potter (my wife was watching one and it was awful). i was excited when the first LOTR came out, but fell asleep in the theater w/in the first 30 mins. i tried to rewatch it and fell asleep again, so i haven't touched the other two. i like the original SW trilogy...better in its original form. out of the second trilogy i only liked the second half of episode III, when it started to get dark. the other two and a half movies of that series sucked.

they actually changed the way things happened with the special edition. perfect example is in the original movies Han Solo was at the Cantina with an Alien bounty hunter Greedo. Greedo was trying to collect the bounty on Han's head. any way in the original they are both sitting down at a table, and han shoots him. in the special edition they changed it so Greedo shot at han first then han shot back in retaliation, making it a more hero like action, instead of the original where han shot greedo without greedo shooting.
