U2's first three albums were stadium-oriented rock whose drawbacks were Bono's annoying grandstanding and the Edge overshadowing the rest of the band.
October was worse than
Boy because U2 reached out too far and stumbled. The band is a lot more balanced on
War, but Bono still sounds preachy and more dp than PE.
Coldplay also made stadium-oriented pop on their first three albums. They successively grew on their second album instead of stumbling. On the third they've mastered their songwriting formula, and the lyrics are the weak point, but Coldplay's vein of sappy shit will outlast U2's preachy shit, if history is true at all (Most kids leave Bob Marley behind when they leave the dorm room, but people from all walks of life buy
1).
The only thing U2 has on Coldplay is that Coldplay doesn't have a great player like the Edge, and that's a mixed non-blessing.
Coldplay at this stage in their career > U2 at this stage in their career.
Just about anybody > U2 right now.
I'm thankful that the average life of a band these days is shorter than it used to be, so we won't have to put up with Coldplay's equivalent of the last 14 years of U2.
