The USA also supplied the Central Powers during World War I. The difference was the British turned American ships back if caught headed to German ports, while the Germans sunk them if caught headed to Allied ports.
By the time the Lusitania was attacked the sense of neutrality within the American government was nonexistent. But in those days it wasn't like we could massively deploy a force to the European continent anyway.
