Brand.Nubian.Total.Pack.[Grand.Puba.Lord.Jamar.Sadat.X.Solos.Duets.Singles.Mixtapes.etc]
Yep, it's another total pack! The only things missing here are a few rarer than rare singles that only your 30-something year-old miserly cousin owns...and doesn't ever...ever share with anyone else. That and some videos. Hope you all enjoy some of the realest, and outright most intelligent rape that there ever was.
Quote:The Five Percent Nation of Islam was a popular inspiration for numerous thinking-man's rap groups during the early '90s, and Brand Nubian was arguably the finest of the more militant crop. Although they were strongly related to the Native Tongues posse in style and sound, they weren't technically members, and were less reserved about spotlighting their politics and religion. Their outspokenness led to controversy, on an even larger scale than similarly minded groups like the X-Clan or Poor Righteous Teachers, in part because Brand Nubian's sheer musicality made them so listenable regardless of what their messages were. The hoopla surrounding their aggressive Afrocentrism sometimes overshadowed the playful and positive sides of their work, as well as the undeniable virtuosity of lead MC Grand Puba's rhymes -- all showcased to best effect on their highly acclaimed debut, One for All.
Brand Nubian was formed in 1989 in the New York suburb of New Rochelle. Grand Puba (born Maxwell Dixon) had previously recorded with a group called Masters of Ceremony, and was joined by Sadat X (born Derek Murphy, originally dubbed Derek X), Lord Jamar (born Lorenzo DeChalus), and DJ Alamo (Murphy's cousin). The group signed with Elektra and released their debut album, All for One, in 1990. Most reviews were glowing, but the stronger rhetoric on the album -- especially the track "Drop the Bomb" -- drew fire from some quarters, including some white Elektra employees reluctant to promote what they saw as reverse racism. Ultimately, the uproar didn't really hurt Brand Nubian's career, but neither did it produce a wider hit with pop or R&B audiences, despite the high regard in which the singles "All for One," "Slow Down," and "Wake Up" are held. A far more serious blow was Grand Puba's departure from the group in late 1991, owing to tensions that had arisen over his handling the lion's share of the rapping. Not only did Brand Nubian lose their clear focal point and chief producer, they also lost DJ Alamo, who elected to continue working with Puba.
Puba released his solo debut, Reel to Reel, in 1992; meanwhile, Lord Jamar and Sadat X regrouped with DJ Sincere (born Terrence Perry) and issued In God We Trust in 1993. It sold fairly well, just missing the Top Ten on the R&B chart, and the single "Punks Jump up to Get Beat Down" was something of a hit, though it also drew fire for its anti-gay slurs. In Puba's absence, the pro-Islam rhetoric grew stronger, with more explicit support for the controversial Minister Louis Farrakhan. By the time of 1994's Everything Is Everything, they'd gotten downright dogmatic, and critics who'd previously defended the group now found them difficult to stomach, both lyrically and musically.
In the wake of the icy reception afforded Everything Is Everything, the remaining members of Brand Nubian drifted apart. Sadat X reunited with Grand Puba for "Play It Cool," a track on the latter's second solo album; Sadat also released his solo debut, Wild Cowboys, in 1996, and subsequently guested on records by a new wave of underground hip-hoppers. Lord Jamar, meanwhile, moved into production, and also landed a recurring role on HBO's prison drama Oz. In 1998, with a new alternative rap movement gaining prominence, the original four members of Brand Nubian reunited for the Arista album Foundation, which received highly positive reviews. Grand Puba and Sadat X both subsequently returned to their solo careers, but they returned with Jamar and Alamo for 2004's Fire in the Hole. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

[1990] - Brand Nubian - One For All [192cbr]
Alongside acts such as Public Enemy and X-Clan, the Brand Nubian quartet (DJ Alamo and MCs Grand Puba, Sadat X, and Lord Jamar) helped introduce a whole new generation to Five-Percenter philosophies and conscious pride. Their 1990 debut was filled with the smooth production and syrupy flows that made the Nubian brand of Afrocentricity accessible and funky. Singles "All for One," "Slow Down," and "To the Right" highlight One for All, though some of the album's up-tempo efforts sound a little dated; "Wake Up," "Step to the Rear," and "Drop the Bomb" also shine. Alongside the wit and wisdom, though, the Nubian trio dropped some lyrical gaffes as well. Throughout One For All, there are plenty of unfortunate references to "hittin' skins," "cave-dwellin'" Caucasians, and hardcore homophobia. Despite its weaker moments, One for All is still one of the most impressive and definitive documents from hip-hop's "conscious" era. --Hua Hsu

[1998] - Brand Nubian - Foundation [192cbr]
Onetime hip-hop representatives for the black boho intelligentsia, Brand Nubian--made up of the core quartet of Grand Puba, Sadat X, Lord Jamar, and DJ Alamo--disbanded in 1990 before reuniting in 1998 for this album. While all the artists have successfully survived apart, their chemistry together still works wonders. With its odd mix of black-power politics, feel-good party songs, and straight lyrical bravado, Foundation surprisingly emerges as one of 1998's better rap albums. Brand Nubian invigorate everything from dance tracks ("Back Up off the Wall") to underground gems ("The Return"). They even manage to update James Brown's anthem "I'm Black and I'm Proud" while sounding less dated than you'd expect. ~ Oliver Wang

[2004] - Brand Nubian - Fire In The Hole [192vbr]
Hip-hop has changed tremendously since Brand Nubian's heyday in the early 1990s, but Grand Puba, Sadat X, and Lord Jamar have stayed the course with an impressive commitment to making meaningful music. Fire in the Hole feels anachronistic at times, and not only because the crew hasn't really revamped its flows. Their attempts at social relevancy on songs like "Still Livin' in the Ghetto," "Momma," and "Soldier's Story" mark a welcome throwback to a different era. They also show that they can box with their contemporaries on songs like "Always Mine" and "Whatever Happened?" as they flex lyrical styles that can run with the young. It's not the most polished album in this group's long history, but at a time when most of their peers have faded out or fallen off, Brand Nubian suggests that hip-hop's retirement age might yet last beyond 35. --Oliver Wang

[1992] - Grand Puba - Reel to Reel [224vbr]
"...if it has a less aggressive tone than many other rap albums, REEL TO REEL is no less funky: Puba is such a gifted rapper, he could probably have made do with a mike, one drumstick and a plastic bucket...Puba's mastery is beyond reproach..." Entertainment Weekly (10/30/92, p.86) - "..Even though REEL TO REEL ends up sounding like different versions of the same song, it's a great song.." - Rating: B+ Q (1/93, p.81) - 3 Stars - Good - "...like LL Cool J, [Puba] is committed to grooves that make cars rock even when they're parked...[Puba] has one of those slurred rapping styles that moves between rapid fire and word in your ear intimacy without losing the beat..." Vibe (Fall/92, p.30) - "..a free-spirited, witty, rough-edged slice of B-boy life, with all its inherent contradictions..." The Source (12/92, p.70) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "..The Grandman is back to show and prove his unique style and flavor...Puba has definitely landed on boardwalk, as his flow is backed up with top notch production.."
