Are internet friends...real friends?

Just wondering if you can develop a friendship with someone you only have contact with through the internet? or Would you have to meet them to consider them a friend? Would you even consider meeting someone you met on-line?

I have a few friends I met 5 years ago on the internet...we met in person and kept in contact. We are still friends today.

Yes, you can definitely develop a friendship by just communicating through the internet!

I met one of my best friends through the internet. I know this person for more than 4 years i think and weve only met three times due to the distance between our homes. Still i consider this person my friend.

Sure. The probability of making a close friend via the internet is higher, since you're most probably going to meet them whilst exploring your own interests.

It is really odd that people find this issue shocking.

In the past, people fell in love as a result of hand written letters that took several months to reach back and forth. (pen-pals)

You have webcam and audio sessions, instant messaging, emails, chatrooms, message boards, social networks like myspace and facebook.

It is a million times easier to connect now

Yeah, I've met a few people that I met on net. Mainly people I play online games with. We have a traditional British get together, and get wasted on pub crawls.

I think so, there are people i've met online and ended up meeting in person and i'm really good friends with them. A few people from here, some people from myspace who I went to school with and didn't know from Campus, etc.

It's easier to really get to know someone online I think because there's no need for the fake front people put up during the first three months or so of getting to know them. You can totally be yourself because... if the person doesn't like you, who cares? Block them and log off.
