Technology Apple iPhone 4 tops Android at Mobile World Congress

Despite no presence whatsoever from Apple and a tendency among the judges to favor exhibitors, the iPhone 4 bested several attending rivals -- including all the current and just- introduced Android devices, as well as the Samsung Galaxy S, HTC Desire and innumerable new iPad competitors to win the "Best Mobile Device" award at the 2011 Mobile World Congress, which is happening in Barcelona, Spain. HTC was named "Device Manufacturer of the Year" both for building their brand into a formidable presence in the world market as well as their own HTC Desire smartphone. Last year, the HTC Hero won Best Mobile Device.

While this was Apple's only award, it was the most important -- reflecting the remarkable success and influence the nine-month-old device has had on the entire market, even with carriers or areas where it is unavailable. Remarkably, the Android OS itself did not garner any direct awards, though Google itself won an award for the best app on its own Android App Marketplace, for Google Maps.

Seems inconsistent to me. If Apple won for the Ipad. That is understandable.

you are asking for a textual ass-kicking comin on here and... lol, you get the point. but really, joking aside and mature opinion below:

the whole apple winning and htc winning the best awards... huge discrepancy.

i think the best phone award should go to samsung since they sold how much? and propelled android sales how much? and massively increased awareness of what android is. i believe i am saying this in an unbiased way. apple is and will be the 'favourite' to take awards for the future until android dominates in the uk and europe. people instantly recognise apple products anywhere yet android devices are less dinstinguishable as of yet. however, that is continually changing as awareness increases.

my point being: iphone 4 sold well, massive improvement upon iphone 3gs but i think samsung galaxy s did more for the samsung galaxy line than the iphone 4 did for the iphone line.

this year will be the year of iphone 5 vs samsung galaxy s2 (iPhone vs Galaxy S: Round 2)
