Google Nexus S is the Samsung GT-i9020? -- Engadget

nexus-s-i9020-fcc.jpg

We've already established that the Nexus S is almost certainly a Samsung -- but what else do we know about it? Well, a quick search for pictures taken with a Nexus S on Flickr and Picasa produced results, believe it or not, and some of those users' albums had been using a Samsung handset with model number GT-i9020 just a few days earlier. If we had to guess, a recent firmware update changed the EXIF identifier for these shots from the code to the actual retail name -- Nexus S, that is -- which explains the switchover. We've got both an FCC filing and a Wi-Fi Alliance certification for the i9020, and it's definitely a smartphone with 802.11 b / g / n (single-band, unfortunately) and AWS 3G, a radio choice that ties it in nicely with T-Mobile as the Best Buy leak would have us believe.

Interestingly, a little digging reveals that all of these shots on photo sharing sites are coming from Google employees and families of Google employees -- and Sammy's i9000 series is closely tied to the Galaxy S line, which makes sense considering how much the Nexus S seems to look like a Galaxy S. Oh, and if that wasn't enough, the FCC label documentation for the i9020 lines up perfectly with the leaked picture. So yeah, it's all kind of coming together -- all we need now, Google, is an official Gingerbread and hardware announce. Let's do this thing.

Well, here we have it!

Is this the Nexus S? -- Engadget

Woah, what do we have here? A new "In Store" web-based flier from Best Buy Mobile has this little nugget on its front page: a previously unseen Galaxy S, running stock Android (possibly 2.3, based on the green icons and black notifications bar) and harboring what looks to be a front facing camera. Sounds like a Nexus S to us! Paired with this morning's little Nexus S slip-of-the-tongue from Best Buy, we're starting to get our hopes up. Don't let us down, Google / T-Mobile / Samsung / Best Buy / planet earth!

The Floodgates are opening!

Nexus S Spy Shots Emerge, Phone Revealed to be the GT-i9020 | Android Phone Fans

The flood gates have opened. After a little nudge from the emergence of a couple of Best Buy leaks, some brave soul has taken it upon themselves to forward some hands-on shots of the handset to Engadget. The photos are apparently about a month old and don’t do much to show off arguably the biggest selling point of the Nexus S, Android Gingerbread, but notice the branding on the back of the handset is very similar to the Nexus One. Just “Google” instead of “with Google” and the Samsung logo. No mention of Galaxy S or Nexus S to be found.

In terms of appearance, you won’t see much other than a slightly tweaked Galaxy S design. It certainly isn’t anything to go ga-ga over on sight alone, but we will hold out hope that internals and Gingerbread will make this thing worthwhile.
Also uncovered via some clever sleuthing is the model number of the Nexus S, the Samsung GT-i9020, which stays in the same numbering scheme of previous GT-i9000 Galaxy S devices. It would seem some Google employees and those close to them have been uploading photos to Flickr via a device with that model number, which at the very least seems to reveal a 5MP camera. FCC and Wi-Fi Alliance filings pin it with single-band 802.11 b/g/n and T-Mobile-friendly AWS 3G.

I can't be the only one that doesn't like glossy plastic, right?

I prefer other stuff like the matte kind that HTC use, but it's not a dealbreaker. I would go for this phone.

Worth mentioning that photos discovered on Picasa and Flickr taken from this device at first said "GT-i9020" in the EXIF data, and later photos from the same users now say "Nexus S".

So between that and the Best Buy leak - it seems they are going with the Nexus S name, contrary to what some sites reported.

Missed the point spectacularly. Even Experience devices have a shelf life. That much should be obvious to anyone that isn't a total idiot.

Or were you expecting the Nexus One to get Walnut Cake/Vanilla Pie/Yoghurt/Zucchini Muffin when those get developed in 7 years time?

Better clarify that in your post then. :)2

im not too keen on the shape of the device since i dont particlarly like rounded edges and curves on them too much. i dont mind it on the corner though like the G1 and Galaxy S. i guess its good to hold using the lower three fingers on your hand (below the index finger) to have the phone rest on.

HTC Mecha (Incredible HD) on Verizon -- with LTE, the new Sense and Android 2.2 | Android Central)

This isn't the first picture of the HTC Mecha (aka the Incredible HD and "Evo-like device coming to Verizon") that's out there, but this is the first time we've seen one powered up -- and it's a good thing it is. Because we now see Android 2.2, the new HTC Sense and -- if you squint just right at the top -- LTE data on Verizon. (And that notification light should make a few of you happy.)

We're told it's currently in testing and that it's consistently getting 9Mbps downstream and 5Mbps upstream -- not too shabby, though real-world results likely will vary.

As for when we might see such a device? It's still pretty unlikely before the first of the year. We've got a full shot of the phone after the break. Thanks, Ed!

I don't really like latest Samsung's designs. They look very cheap. Like Aron pointed out - very not nice glossy plastic and like Sandeep pointed out - there's something wrong with those curves.
It all started with i5800. I'm rather "meh" about new Samsung phones. I doubt they'll sell as well as their earlier phones.

About HTC Mecha I expected it to be in the lower mid-end, somewhere below Desire Z. It doesn't look like it though. It would mean that there are no new-gen mid-end HTC phones, and by new-gen I mean those with redesigned Sense.

If this is true..... holy shit

Exclusive: Samsung 'flagship' phone with Gingerbread and huge display coming in early 2011 -- Engadget

Okay, so you're not feeling Samsung's Nexus S. We'd say that's a little premature, but still, we get it. We understand. How about this, then? Is this more to your liking? We've just been tipped with a few morsels on what should become Samsung's flagship Android device early next year -- February, to be specific, suggesting we could see an unveiling at MWC -- and it's looking promising. Different parts of the slide deck describe it as having either a 4.3- or 4.5-inch "sAMOLED2" display, presumably standing for "Super AMOLED 2" and implying that Sammy's made some advancements over the screens we've been seeing on the Galaxy S series this year. It'll naturally have Android Gingerbread and be equipped with an 8 megapixel camera capable of 1080p video capture, 14.4Mbps HSPA, Bluetooth 3.0, a 1.2GHz core of some sort, and 16GB of storage onboard. The deck describes it as having an "ultra sleek design," and judging from the side shot, we'd tend to agree. So who's holding out for this?

hmm somehow looks bogus. It's based on the very same thing that's been circulating the net for months already.
And I dunno but 4,5 inch is too huge for a phone to me.

^can it look more like an iPhone?

Anyway I'm stoked if the Nexus S will be on T-Mobile. I get 12% off the bill and free activation.
