Technology Android

I'm sure it will get to Canada by then.

I think this is going to be the flagship phone for Android 2.x, the same way the G1 was for Android 1.x.

Trust you to leave it too late.

Cyanogen got sent a cease-and-desist order by Google. Turns out while Android is open source, the proprietary Google Apps (Contact Sync Framework, Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube, Market) were not and thus, technically, he was illegally distributing them. They basically turned a blind eye, until the new 1.6 market leaked and Cyan included it in his ROM. That pissed them off.

The scene continues though. It's just that in future Cyan ROM's, you'll have to run a script that backs up your Google apps, then flash his ROM, then reload the Google apps from your backup. It adds an extra layer of stuff to do, but still, it's not that big of a deal when all is said and done. Google should have known better, and the Android team does know better, but it was the legal team causing problems. They suffered some bad PR because of it.

It's not too late of course, I was kidding about that. I'll upload the necessary files for you and run you through it later.

does that explain why that CM update didnt come?

they approximated 2-3days, but its been about 2 weeks since.

Exactly right. Cyan's experimental tree was very close to being stable when he got the Cease-and-Desist order.

I've been debating installing the experimental ROM regardless. It might be a little buggy, but it's supposed to be even faster and generally more stable than what you and I are both running at the moment (4.0.4, the previous stable ROM).

so would we back up gmail, youtube, gtalk and all google apps to sd card using the file manager i.e. astro and then update the CM ROM and then install from SD card?

It's a bit more complex than that. It's more than the apps, it's some core parts of android too including the contact sync to your gmail account etc.

noooooooooooooooooo. i just synced my university account with gmail literally just minutes ago!!

You don't have to worry. People are writing scripts to make the backup process simple.

^what does that mean for a n***a like me? When can I expect to go check for system updates and find it?

that is expensive!!

The Motorola CLIQ is horrible. The keyboard blows.

However, the Sholes (or Motorola Tao as it may be named) is amazing.

It's bizarre how Moto can bring out two Android phones, both with physical keyboards, but one (CLIQ) be terrible and the other (Tao) being mindblowing.

Sholes/Tao is what I have my eye on.

And yes, some "in the wild" shots just came out.
