In a potentially controversial chat with Blender mag, Alicia Keys, 27, says, "Gangsta rap was a ploy to convince black people to kill each other. Gangsta rap didn’t exist."

Ms. Keys, sporting a gold AK-47 pendant around her neck, says she has been reading books by some of the members of the Black Panthers.

She says the feud between East Coast and West Coast rappers, which led to the murders of Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G., was fueled "by the government and the media, to stop another great black leader from existing."

The singer is not available for comment, her rep says.

I also think behind Pacs murder is mainly the government. Most probably Suge worked with them

i read somewhere on mutulu shakurs site (i think) that a government type agency called cointellpro killed pac and biggie

shes right i think. pac said he wasnt a gangsta rapper and used great examples by sayin marlon brando is an actor not a gangster actor or axel rose whos a rocker not a gangster rocker but its wot the media an gov do cos they all cunts.

lol, seriously! this is a load of BS tho, it is what it is, it's not a ploy for something to happen. it's like me saying classical music was a ploy to convince white people to be posh! does that make sense!?

What the fuck yo, who is this chick to start bashing a subgenre of rap? I recall bein in a classroom having to hear about the violent nature of gangster rap and I don't give a damn wtf anyone says. It's like Ice Cube said in his song, gangsta rap made me do it! To logically say that any song/book/movie/media creation made anyone do anything is to say that the person affected was dumb or easily manipulated. BTW, does this mean that death metal makes white kids shoot up schools? Gimme a break and turn the mic on those fools in the media makin the controversy. They probably do this to keep our minds off the real issues, whatever those are...

so gangsta rap was created by the government as a ploy to convince black people to kill each other. well that completely explains why the government did just about everything in its power trying to get it banned when it first started becoming popular. it all makes sense now :rolleyes

I wouldn't go as far as to say the government created it to have this result. But from an outside view on it I would say Record Companies want rappers to appear to be gangster and have some kind of credibility as to make it true to the listener which is the dangerous part. The scary part is that the gang banging culture existed before "gangster rap" so to cure gangster rap you must first cure the culture of it on the community level. And also stopping people from buying into needlessly violent music that offers no artistic/creative/political value might help. I think Alicia was a little off base with this comment, not knowing in what context she used it in.
