My ABS light is always on. I'm confused because I dont know if it is supposed to be on or not. I've been in cars who have it on and some cars who have it off. So should it be on or off ?

if its on it might mean the abs is working. my stealth always had the light on and when i drove it hard, it never locked the brakes.

It should be off. I have never heard of a car who leaves the dash warning light on to inform you it's working. I would go to the garage if I was you.

Also are you sure it's the ABS light?

i believe ABS is supposed to be always on automatically. if the light is on i think that means theres a problem, its not indicating that its working.you need to get it to a service centre like pittsey said.

Yeah, find out from the manual what it exactly means first. It can be either telling you that the ABS system is functioning and ready to save your ass when you're about to spin off (:p) or that the system is working at the very moment or that there's a problem with it. The latter two would be a bad thing, ABS isnt supposed to come on when you're not even braking.

But uh, yeah, get it checked out.

Do you even need ABS if its not rainy or snowy?

No, as long as you don't try to corner like Schumacher, because (like C.R.Y. said) you'll be treated to a hefty dose of understeer. And unless you drive a RWD car and keep your head cool, it's safer to have the ABS rescue you instead having to resort to rally car manouevres. :p

go to autozone and ask them for a diagnostic scan (its free) then take the codes online find out what they are saying, then take that to the mechanic and say "fix: so and so:" that will save you some money

The ABS should be off. If you don't have the money to get the Anti-lock system fixed then you can go without it for a while but eventually get it fixed. Heres some info:
What if the ABS fails? Anti-lock brake systems are designed to be fail-safe. Nevertheless, they are equipped with a diagnostic feature that automatically activates and tests the major components each time the car is started and monitors them throughout the journey.

In the rare event of a failure, the ABS would be deactivated by its own safety circuit. A warning light goes on indicating to the driver that the vehicle is now in conventional base-brake mode.
