Pompey shambles as seven stars face FA Cup final axe - to avoid bonus payouts

Seven Portsmouth players face FA Cup final heartache if they beat Spurs in tomorrow’s Wembley semi-final.

Strikers Kanu and John Utaka, midfielders Richard Hughes and Papa Bouba Diop and reserve *goalkeeper Jamie Ashdown will all be left out of the Final team because of bonus deals in their contracts.

Defender Steve Finnan would also miss out because of a clause in his contract earning him a year’s extension once he has played 25 games.

And on-loan Aruna Dindane can make just one more appearance before penniless Pompey are forced to pay £4million to parent club Lens to sign him.

One unnamed player could even be forced to miss the semi-final.

It will be another *humiliation after a season of embarrassing financial revelations for Pompey that have led to them becoming the first Premier League club to go into administration.

Portsmouth could be officially relegated today but manager Avram Grant wants to end a crazy season by leading them back to the FA Cup Final.

Kanu, goal hero of Pompey’s 2008 triumph over Cardiff, heads the list of players who may miss the Final because of bonuses of between £50,000 and £100,000 if the Fratton Park side lift the cup.

Portsmouth are £84m in debt and administrator Andrew Andronikou said: “We are in negotiations with agents to try to get the clauses waived. I am sure none of the players would want to miss an FA Cup Final.

“When I saw the figures my heart skipped a beat and I thought about pulling us out of the competition.”

One piece of good news for Pompey is the return of England goalkeeper David James after injury.

Apparantley he's in top condition but he just needs match-fitness now. He's been training with the dutch amateur side AFC for a few weeks now and is shooting with full power and sprinting around normally.
