Apologies to Boogie Nights, Jackie Brown, The Last Samurai, Saving Private Ryan, Vanilla Sky, & Yojimbo, among others, who didn't make my list. MIIKE, I'M SORRY!

No particular order.

SEMI-LONG-AS-HELL-POST-WARNING

American Psycho-Christian Bale's crowning role, and THE definitive look on how shallow and vain the 80's really were. Bateman's speeches on Huey Lewis, Phil Collins, and Whitney Houston proved once and for all, how the 80's ruined music forever. Bateman's morning beauty rituals, his paranoia over business cards, and his dinner reservation worries were far more troubling for me than all the people he "killed", but maybe that's just me.

American Pop-Ralph Bakshi's greatest work, IMO, and the coolest animated movie, not to mention a very relevant musical biopic, in a sense. Showing the growth of American popular music from the early 1900's to the late 70's-early 80's, the generations of a family through the decades show how music affected their wild lives. The scene of Zalmie's firstborn going to war, and playing the piano just before being shot in the back by a German soldier, gets me every time. KILLER soundtrack.

Dark City-The most amazing set design I've ever seen in a movie. Alex Proyas (I'll forgive him for I, Robot) has always had an eye for great sets, and just like his set from The Crow, Dark City's set design at times, overshadows the movie itself. The whole premise of aliens kidnapping humans and placing them in a fully-functioning city to try to figure out how humanity works is one of the most inventive plot scenarios I've seen in a movie. Great cast (I even like Kiefer Sutherland for once), and beautiful atmosphere. Where is Shell Beach?????

Gridlock'd-What can I say, 'Pac's best acting job by leaps and bounds, Tim Roth is usually amazing, but the chemistry between the two is something that you NEVER see in movies today, they could have been a Wesley-Woody tandem that could have done countless movies together. The movie is a witty look at how these state drug-programs really are hypocritical and full of red tape. I love 'Pac as a rapper, but I've said it before and I'll say it again; he was a better actor. Remember, he was an actor first.

Kill Bill Vol. 2-This movie holds the record for how many times I've seen one movie in theatres. I saw this movie over and over, trying to notice every little nuance and touch of personality, the way the shots were set up, the score, the soundtrack, the acting, the use of color, I have never fallen more in love with a movie. The first Kill Bill was good, it didn't blow me away, and I've never really been impressed with Uma as an actress (I am a QT-enthusiast, I'll admit), but this is a movie where everything worked. Cast was perfect, David Carradine had a new definitive role to be remembered for, Gordon Liu was remembered again, Uma delivered an OSCAR-WORTHY performance (wasn't even nominated, I still don't understand it), and Quentin outdid himself.

The Last of the Mohicans-Michael Mann is a great director, some people love Heat, some love Collateral, a few love Ali (I don't), I love this movie. I grew up with this movie. This was the first R-rated movie I remember seeing, my dad loved this movie, and the more I watched it, the more I was enamored with the movie as a whole. Daniel Day-Lewis, in a career of memorable roles, sticks out in this one, and delivers more memorable lines than anyone. "One of these days you and I are gonna have a serious disagreement". Badass before there was badass, and Magua has to be one of the best villains in cinema over the last 20 years or so. "When the grey hair is dead, Magua will eat his heart. Before he dies Magua will put his children under the knife, so the grey hair will know his seed is wiped out forever". Whoooo!!!! Intense!

Legends of the Fall-I've heard this movie being called a "chick flick" by some, but watch this movie all the way through, it's an epic. It's amazing, I'm not surprised Ed Zwick went on to direct another of my favorites, The Last Samurai. Legends is about the lives of three brothers, away from the growth of America, yet you see throughout the movie, how hard it is to stay away from the rest of the world. If they would have all stayed on the farm, they would have been fine, but all eventually left to seek their fortunes, whether bravery (war), acceptance by the people (politics), or peace of mind (sailing the seas, hunting in distant lands). A movie I could watch everyday.

Natural Born Killers-I know QT is pissed about what Oliver Stone did to his script, but I think it works. This movie is a satire of one section popular culture in much the same way American Psycho is a satire of a different section of popular culture. Both movies' protagonists are insane, both react in very different ways, but in this movie, one turns out to be a national celebrity. Woody Harrelson as Mickey Knox glorifies ultraviolence to the point that everybody else in the movie is mezmerized by his actions, even the media. Juliette Lewis as Mallory is even more insane, and seems more unable to control her actions in the end, actually the entire cast is insane in a way. Tommy Lee Jones as McClusky, Tom Sizemore as Scagnetti, and especially Robert Downey Jr. as Wayne Gale.

Ravenous-Probably the one movie on this list that the fewest people have seen. This movie died a quick death in the box office, and I had to discover it at 3:00 am one night years ago on HBO, I think it was. And I loved it. This movie turned me on to the movies of Guy Pearce and Robert Carlyle. If I never saw this movie, I never would have seen Memento, Trainspotting or LA Confidential. Easily the most disturbing cannibal movie I've seen (Cannibal Holocaust had a bigger gross-out factor, but was hokey, as well). The story of a fort occupied by failed soldiers who go on a quest led by a mysterious Scottish drifter to save a group in a cave (who apparently turned to cannibalism to survive), turns into a fight for survival when the drifter turns out to be !SPOILER! the one who killed everyone in the cave and ate them to gain their strength. The whole scene where Guy Pearce's character had to stay in the pit with a broken leg, and ate the body of his dead comrade was so offputting, I still get chills.

Willow-This was actually the first movie I remember seeing at all (I don't remember anything before 4 years old, so it probably wasn't the first), and it's the movie that stays with me still. Yes, it has been called a Star Wars ripoff in a fantasy setting (it was based on a story by George Lucas), but Star Wars could be called a rip off of Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress, but let's not split hairs. Willow was a fun movie, and aside from how lame "the brownies" were, there's not a bad thing I could say about this movie. Warwick Davis is a better little actor than Mini-me could ever be, Val Kilmer was actually playing a role where it didn't look like he was in pain doing it (I love the guy, but sometimes it looks like he's drugged out or just in pain for some reason when he's acting, even when the scene doesn't call for it). Ron Howard did a great job directing, and I really was convinced with the set design, especially the final castle.
