That's too bad, kinda puts me off buying a Samsung.

Im trying to convince my mum to get the Galaxy Portal (as i may have mentioned earlier), and also one of my cousins who is visiting, hope she gets one before she goes back to her school. I would love to root both of them.

Do they require updating through Kies? or is Kies only for Touchwiz... this gets me thinking because the Samsung Galaxy Portal is vanilla android and not custom UI layered.

Even then, if it IS required, i will root them and install and update the custom ROMs without Kies.

I have no clue about the kernels. would i be required to change them in order to flash sam's kitchen roms on top? or would sam's kitchen flash a new kernel along with the selected ROM?

Im kind of tempted to get the Galaxy Portal for myself when my contract ends.

Does anyone flash nightly builds? Casey, ARon, SOFI?

Also, Synful, did you get the G2?

Man im feeling like i miss out on something if i dont upgrade to 2.2. (and the future updates) but its such a pain in the ass to read through all the instructions and get this fucking thing to work eventually.

I just spent 2 hours searching the god damn internet for help regarding this stupid Kies software problem (its more like many problems, really). All i want is to plug in my phone, push 2 buttons and then it should update automatically.

I need to find me a friend who does that crap for me.

I dunno what phone you have but if you root, installing updates is a ton easier, especially with ROM Manager.

Galaxy Spica/Portal don't use Kies. You just load everything via Odin.

Sebastian, Pittsey you can also use Odin if you wish:

Odin is what Samsung service centers use. I assumed that Kies is much more user-friendly and easier to use.

Someone help me with this issue, please.

I use SetCPU to OC my Droid. I have profiles set in place for overheating and screen off. I always leave my default settings at 1 GHz max and 125 MHz min. It works best for me and the battery lasts for over a day this way.

However, every time I open up SetCPU, just to check to see what's going on, I get the notification, from SuperUser I'm assuming, that it has just given SetCPU SU permissions. Does that mean every time I turn my screen off, the SU permissions go away? And that when I do this, I am back to stock or whatever the ROM is naturally at because SetCP has no SU permissions?

It's been bothering me although I don't notice any performance issues. But it still keeps popping up. No other app I use does this.

I played with the Desire Z today. It doesn't really have that high-end feel and I dislike the keyboard mechanism but overall I was impressed. Especially with how it's integrated with this: https://www.htcsense.com/
Connecting with your phone, texting and locking your phone via a webiste for free? Yeah, awesome.
Imo new HTC phones are the best as far as software additions are concerned.

That image of the Samsung Galaxy S2 is quite old, a fe months old. As it remains its still a rumour. But specs like those and running Gingerbread would encourage me to hold onto my G1 and not upgrade until it comes out here. It looks very nice too.

My cousin has gone to get her new phone today... ive told her to go and get the Samsung Galaxy Portal on 3 mobile. She wants to go with the O2 network, but hopefully she'll go for the better phone on an inferior (but from my experience a quite good) network rather than a very basic (Blackberry) phone on a better network. Only thing is she says she doesnt want an iphone or a BB, but i think they'll try to sell her a BB if she walks into the O2 shop since the majority of them meet her budget. Hopefully she gets the Portal and then my mum follows suit.

I wonder what the chances of the Droid getting Gingerbread officially are. It seems like I'll be hanging on to the Droid and it'll be my last cell phone for a few years. I don't care about custom ROMs built on GB source. Well, I do, but I'm not talking about that right now.

looks like she got the Nokia E72 dammit! She will have problems with that phone like my brother did with his E71. Symbian FTL.

Casey, when is that app developer convention thing happening? You know what I'm talking about? It was where they showcased the technologies and integrating them into the apps.

This is a launcher that makes your phone look like a PC running Windows. Pretty cool looking. .apk is inside the .rar.

No, there was one last year around this time. Maybe early December, late-November. I had my Eris by then and they were handing out awards for best ideas and stuff.
Android Developer Challenge? It's not yearly. They've had 2 so far - one before the G1 was released and then the second one. My guess is that the next one won't come till there's Tegra 2 devices out and Android Market comes to Google TV, and it'll focus on TV/tablet apps.
