FIVE REASONS GOOGLE ANDROID SMARTPHONES WILL BEAT iPHONE, BLACKBERRY, WINMO

source- zdnet

The Google Android mobile operating system currently runs on less than 2 percent of the world’s smartphones, but research firm Gartner predicts the platform will grow to 14 percent of the global smartphone market in 2012 — beating Apple’s iPhone, Windows Mobile and RIM’s BlackBerry platforms.

Computerworld notes that Android will pale only to the Symbian OS, installed mostly on Nokia devices. Nokia is the world’s No. 1 phone manufacturer worldwide, and Symbian runs on about half of all smartphones.

Symbian’s share will fall to 39 percent by 2012, Gartner predicts.

Here are five reasons why Android will beat iPhone, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile on the global stage, according to Gartner’s forecast:

* Google backs Android, a major pipeline for its cloud services.
* Android is improving rapidly. The Cupcake 1.5 release was well-received, and Donut 1.6 has already been sent over the air to handset owners.
* Android is open, making it easier to quickly gain developers’ support.
* Android will run on phones from several manufacturers, which will help it quickly spread through the marketplace. HTC, Motorola and Samsung are already supporting handsets.
* Android combines the best of what’s out there. It’s open, but it offers iPhone-like menus and apps, with Windows Mobile-esque icons, with Palm Pre-like multitasking. There’s another arms race afoot — the battle among Android handset makers as to which company can squeeze the most out of the OS.

As reported by Computerworld, Gartner forecasts the following market share in 2012:

* Symbian: 203 million handsets, 39 percent of the market;
* Google Android: 76 million handsets, 14.5 percent of the market;
* Apple iPhone OS: 71.5 million handsets, 13.7 percent of the market;
* Windows Mobile: 66.8 million handsets, 12.8 percent of the market;
* RIM BlackBerry OS: 65.25 million handsets, 12.5 percent of the market;
* Linux variants: 28 million handsets, 5.4 percent of the market;
* Palm webOS: 11 million handsets, 2.1 percent of the market.

The main takeaway: Android’s the biggest gainer of the bunch, at the expense of RIM’s BlackBerry OS.

(Remember: these are global figures, not the U.S. market, which is dominated by the iPhone and BlackBerry OSes. Still, they indicate the rapid global growth of the smartphone segment.)

Which will you choose?
I actually predict it will happen sooner than 2012. I think by mid 2011 Android will have more market share than Apple and Blackberry.

Just as I have said many times, Apple and Blackberry will be the main ones to suffer at the hands of our beloved droid.

oh, and fuck Nokia and fuck their shitty Symbian OS. I don't even consider them to be smartphones, and neither do the people that buy them. People who want real smartphones are not buying Nokia products, it's just the casual market, and their reach in third world and deprived countries. In fact I don't think Nokia themself consider Symbian to be a smartphone OS, their latest high-end product, the N900 is a real smartphone and doesn't run the Symbian OS, it's running something new called Maemo.

What else is new...

Oh yeah. There's going to be a special edition MyTouch3G designed by Fender (the guitar manufacturers). This one will have a wood grain finish and include a 3.5mm audio jack, unlike the original MyTouch3G.

This confirms (at least for me) that T-Mobile are pushing certain Android devices to the former Sidekick market. Remember how they would make special editions of the Sidekicks for different demographics? Well that's what they are doing with this now, since there aren't going to be any more Sidekicks (Microsoft bought out Danger and most of the staff either quit or got fired. 4 of the main people behind Danger/Sidekicks are now at Google working on Android, a couple of others are at Palm working on their webOS, Palm Pre, etc).

Also Verizon are getting the HTC Hero and the Motorola Sholes, so good news for any of you on Verizon.

The Motorola CLIQ/DEXT will be available both in the UK and the US within the next week. IMO the keyboard sucks on it, and it's worth waiting a couple months for the Sholes instead.

Oh yeah....all the smartphone platforms EXCEPT Apple are getting full Flash 10 from Adobe within the next 6-8 months. That's Android, WinMo, Symbian, Palm webOS and Blackberry. So suck on that, iLosers. lol.

so how come people can facebook chat on their iPhones and I can't on my android?
Facebook hate Google and vice versa.

I forget why. Something today with some business deal that went sour.

Hence why it took ages for an official Facebook app for Android, and it's still fairly basic compared to the iPhone one.

You can actually use Facebook chat on Android though, just not through the official app yet. Download the app called Meebo. Then go to meebo.com from your computer and add "Facebook Chat" to your services from the website. Then it'll show up in the app as well.

Here's the Fender MyTouch I was talking about. It's just a sunburst-wood design, not actual wood. Still pretty freakin cool tho.

That does look pretty nice, still doesn't have a keyboard though lol. Tell me that shit shouldn't come with an official mobile version of guitar hero!

So yeah, Casey mother fucking Rain. There is no way I can run apps off my sd without my phone being rooted huh?

Yeah. They should have done a G1 version as well, it's all about the hardware keyboard.

it's very possible they could package it with guitar hero preinstalled. i did hear something about it coming with certain custom apps preinstalled, maybe the Android version of Guitar Hero will be one of them...it's already in the market, I forget what it costs though.

As for your question, unfortunately not. And if you already upgraded to 1.6, unfortunately you've made things a bit more difficult for yourself with regards to rooting.

If you flash back to 1.5 you can utilise the 1-click-root method and be rooted within 10 minutes.

either use what casey recommended or try "Fbabble" from the market, you can get chatting straight away. also upload pictures and change your staus from the app too.

google and android better come to an agreement because they need to keep their performance above apple's in every department if they are to outsell the iphone and other smartphones.

All the main networks in the UK have Android now:

T-Mobile: G1, G2Touch (HTC Hero), T-Mobile Pulse
Orange: HTC Hero, Moto CLIQ/DEXT
Vodafone: HTC Magic, HTC Tattoo
O2: Samsung Galaxy, Samsung Moment (rumor)

What about the main networks in the US?

Verizon are getting the HTC Hero and the Moto Sholes/Tao
T-Mobile have the G1, HTC Magic (MyTouch3G) and Moto CLIQ
Sprint have the Samsung Moment and the HTC Hero
Cellular South have the HTC Hero

AT&T bow down to their Apple masters who don't want them to have Android. Although rumor is that Dell are making an Android phone to run on AT&T.

Have I missed any US networks there?

Yo Mil, lemme ask u something, is there anyway to make the g1 vibrate when u get a text? I only get that light flashing when my profile is set to vibrate.. which doesnt help when the phones in my pocket

I wonder if we'll see any entry-level phone with Android. I don't mean "entry-level" like Tattoo which is expensive as hell here. I mean cheaper phones - more like 100$ Nokias with Symbian.
