Coronavirus

And here we go, the truth starts coming out:

“Nearly 14% of people tested in the first phase of a coronavirus antibody study in New York state tested positive, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Thursday. About one-fifth, 21.2%, of positive results were throughout New York City. Downstate, including Long Island, Westchester and Rockland counties, accounted for 28.4% of cases. According to the results, Cuomo said, the infection rate means that 2.7 million people could be infected across the state, which has a population of about 19 million.”

https://www.usnews.com/news/nationa...tibody-tests-show-infection-rate-of-nearly-14

Okay, it’s just a first-phase study. But if it’s even close to 14% for NY state, that’s big. If we just round off the whole country to a low 8%, that’s about 25.6 million people, which was my low estimate. I originally came up with 8-15% by figuring it came here in Dec and spread like a cold virus, and that's the numbers we would see. This would mean the mortality rate would go down to something like the flu. So we didn't have to shut down? No, we did because unlike the flu we don't have a vaccine. So more will get covid and more elderly and immune-compromised will die. Also, covid can give anyone the nastiest kind of pneumonia that barely gives symptoms until the lungs are in critical condition.

The only way to partially open society before there’s an effective vaccine is to wait for the numbers to stabilize and then to have a proper testing, tracking and tracing system set up. Period. But that won't happen because people need to make money and Trump sucks, so we'll probably see a second wave and then a third this winter that might be the worst.
If they ever derive a vaccine for it, do you think it would be administered at a regular doctor's office or will the CDC or some other governing body keep tight control of it and only administer it to certain people, like those at high risk?

Basically, if it comes out by this Fall, will it be a recommended shot like the flu vaccine is every year? Or would you need to meet certain criteria to get access to it, kind of like how the testing process is now (requires that you show symptoms)?

If these antibody tests are legit, this is crazy contagious.

Over the last 30 days there have already been more US deaths from COVID than there are during an entire average year from the flu, and this happened during a full lockdown.

Also, I wonder how many people deliberately won't want the vaccine.

I doubt a vaccine will be ready to the general public by fall. If one does show promise it would be given to front-line health care workers first, what’s called emergency use authorization, depending on the vaccine safety and efficacy data and the severity of the outbreak at the time. If a vaccine eventually passes all trial phases and becomes available to the general public, I think it will be recommended that everyone get it just like the flu vaccine, and will be available at drugstores, etc. If this virus has killed too many people by then or Trump is still President, it might become mandatory to get it. Definitely mandatory in China.

So the Chinese would need to get it the way Southeast Asian countries had to get the BCG shot decades ago?

This turd is going to pull several fast ones leading up to the election to steal a win. Wisconsin was only the tip of the iceberg and I'm thinking his antics regarding voting will outweigh the deaths of his voters that ignore the precautions.

Or he'll say he has to postpone the election because of the crisis. And if there is an election and he loses, he'll scream voter fraud and his AG will back him up and start investigations (into China's influence) that will last a year at least.

My sister lives in NJ and she has corona. She tested positive about 10 days ago.

She’s recovering slowly.
Glad she's doing ok. My friend's slowly recovering too, seems like 3 weeks to hit close 100%. Does she have any idea where she got it from? Work? Grocery store?

I am not sure I trust the death stats... my mums friend had cancer.. died in a hospice, death cert said Covid 19.... WTF she didn;t have it
The numbers are definitely not right as they are just official stats. These go both ways, globally definitely erring on the side of underdiagnosis. For most poorer countries people who die from COVID are typically classified as dead from cardiovascular disease.

In Poland, there is currently a horrible government in place that's trying to push elections knowing the opposition is sitting idle and refused to promote their candidate in a bid to postpone the elections. Imagine significantly more extreme right-wing and nationalistic than Trump. Horrible things are happening at the moment to get the official COVID numbers down, to the point the official stats currently look just ridiculous. People with symptoms aren't getting tested. Families of people confirmed to have COVID who suffocated to death were told that the official cause of death was generic lung failure.

I'm fortunate to be locked down in Vancouver. British Columbia is sitting at ~25 new cases per day, the local government's response and the healthcare system have done an excellent job here. So the he curve has been flat for a couple of weeks now, yet most people are really careful waiting this out at homes. But even here the focus is on testing high risk groups, such as seniors in care homes - there are still local outbreaks that fly under the radar.

So we had to place an order for KN95 masks today. 50 masks for $170. Might as well invest in a UV bath for them too.

Wore a mask in public for the first time today. It's going to become mandated in Illinois on May 1 so might as well get used to it now.

Nice, it's better than nothing. Thanks, I'm gonna order some for my parents.

Yeah, I hope they're good. It was selling like hot cakes on SlickDeals a few weeks back but I didn't get in on it until later on. I bet it's tougher to breathe through than those cheap blue ones everyone's wearing but I hope it at least stays on as easily as the blue ones. Once you start talking, it gets tougher to breathe and it's like the mask knows this and starts to slide down slowly over time so you can breathe better lol

Just checked my shipping info and it says it's being shipped from "West Long Branch, NJ." Not sure how close that is to you, but that's probably 2-3 days, tops. They're saying 5/6-5/11 for us

Over an hour out. During the summertime we usually hit up the beach in Long Branch.

I wonder how much of an issue these masks are gonna be when it starts getting hotter.
