I don't even want a quad core inside. Apple proved that a freaking Iphone 4 (which is about as fast as SGS) can run 99% of things as smooth as quad cores. It's not about internal hardware power either. It's about other things, like the design - if it was something as silly as very thin bezels, it would be cool.
With architecture like Krait (they have their own new architecture too, which is said to be about as efficient) they could easily power the device with a single or dual core (it would be more than enough) and make the device look very cool instead. They lock their batteries anyway so it's possible to use one with unconventional shape so it takes far less space, there are good 8mpx camera modules that are very small. With that tech they could release either an extremely slim phone, or one that would have virtually no bezels on the front. That's the innovation I'm looking forward to. I know that everything still points to an Iphone 4s with a bigger screen but since they know how to keep a secret I still have hope.

I was just about to ask "are you saying your ideal phone would be a modified iPhone 4S, and would that mean Apple's iPhone was the closest thing to what you want in a phone." Then I saw your last sentence.
The iPhone form factor really is great. I can't say that about anything pre-iPhone 4, but the past two iterations of Apple's phone have really impressed me. A friend of mine has a GS2, and while it's nice and powerful, it doesn't feel as solid as an iPhone.
I already mentioned that I think Android>>> iOS, but when it comes to the hardware, I really think Apple has it right. Who needs a quad-core Samsung processor? Dual-core seems to be enough, according to your past posts, for even the most avid user. Your phone isn't supposed to be a computer, so hopefully you aren't playing a game while video chatting on Skype, and using Google Nav at the same time. Sounds ridiculous already.
If only there was a way to either get Android on an iPhone, or get a manufacturer to to make a solid-feeling phone. The latter seems more plausible, and definitely more likely, but the iPhone needs that bump in screen size as well. 3.5 or 3.7", whatever it is, isn't enough, and the GS2 needs to shrink down a tad bit. I feel that would be the perfect phone.
Hardware needs to stop moving so fast, at least vertically, and needs to be more efficient so I can use my phone as I do and still have it last over three days on a single charge. I don't think that's too much to ask for. Plus, if manufacturers do their job and pay attention to battery life and such, it would kinda be like meeting halfway with the developers. They can tweak their apps as well, instead of trying to play catch up with hardware specs and trying to compensate for high and low-end devices being able to run their apps.

^Yeah it's funny but most people I know who had Iphones also had their screens cracked.
Coonie, I'm not saying that the Iphone is perfect hardware. It's far from it for me, most of all it's way too outdated and Iphone 4S feels like a 3 year old mid-end Droid.
Currently I think the HTC One S is the closest to having perfect hardware but it's not revolutionary by any means, it's just another rather uninspiring smartphone on the outside.
What I'm saying is, that Apple are capable of releasing a revolutionary phone, the company operates in a specifc way, prioritizing design and innovation, working like a lot of small start ups competing with cool design ideas.
I don't need faster hardware, like I already said. I'd like something cooler, that looks and feels better than most modern phones. What I dislike the most about modern phones is that a lot of space on the front panel is wasted. There's also plenty of space inside of the body wasted too in almost all smartphones. For manufacturers it's apparently okay because everyone does it.
At this point it's totally possible to release a slim and small device while having a capable battery and having a 4,5 inch display, that would cover 95% of the front panel (Iphone 4 is a bit over 4,5 inches diagonal).
Android manufacturers operate this way - they order a new 'motherboard' that will work with a new-gen CPU, display etc. and then think of a design they could pack their hardware into, which is usually nothing new and if it's slimmer or lighter, that's cool.
Apple think of a cool design and then pick hardware they could fit in (at least that's what they used to do until 4S and new Ipad). That's why I think they're capable of creating something cool, that the Android world would follow.
Even Samsung, with their Galaxy line are not brave enough to innovate. Each generation is about faster processor and bigger screen. This time they tried to add some features but frankly, nobody cares about that - you want the coolest hardware and software base and then you install features as apps, by yourself. "Features" that come with your phone out of the box are considered by most people as bloatware, so focusing on packing more is going wrong way and wasting your efforts and budget, because there's probably a better app for that already.

I'm not saying the hardware inside is, but it's actually funny because.. The camera module is in fact from 2009 - a similar one was used in Sony's Xperia X10 and got upgraded in 2011 for the Xperia Arc and Iphone 4S, but differences were really minor. They added some features improving shots in low-light conditions. It's still a great mobile phone camera module, so it's all good here.

Yeah that's what I used to think too - I never had a single bigger scratch on my phone. Until yesterday. I dropped my phone while riding a bike. Now my phone has a visible plastic deformation on the upper right corner and I'll just have to deal with it. Now I think that phones should be rugged enough to last an accidental drop with ease because it just happens. Looks like the Galaxy S3 and Iphone 4S are amongst the most fragile from what I see. While I see Iphone screens shattered all the time I also saw a Galaxy S3 with what looked like slightly shattered back cover. Apparently there's also an extra layer of.. something there that can get shattered too, like with the Iphone. If I had a Galaxy S3 or Iphone 4s with me yesterday I think I would be really angry now.

The feeling I get while holding an Iphone is more than "dense", it's "heavy" for its size. The Galaxy S2 is much lighter, while having a much bigger screen and imho it feels much cooler to hold. Generally the lighter the phone is it'll feel less "solid", as you describe it. Clearly SGS2 is not less solid than the Iphone, though the light plastic back cover might appear as not so rugged. I still prefer the cool feelof a lighter device.
Back cover on my S3, I can handle. A new one is less than 20 quid.
But if I crack the front... Insurance job. Although, so far, all my phones have remained mint.
No argument from me. The Samsung phones feel plasticy. The iphone feels solid. Like metal and glass (I know it's not)... But... I didn't buy a fashion accessory. But I would like a more solid feeling phone... But still with a removable battery.
