Jewish groups and lawmakers in Britain have criticised the grandson of Queen Elizabeth for wearing a Nazi soldier's uniform to a fancy dress party.

Prince Harry apologised in a statement after a British newspaper printed a picture of him clutching a cigarette and a drink and wearing a swastika armband.

"I think a lot of people will be disappointed to see that photograph and it will cause a lot of offence," said Michael Howard, leader of Britain's main opposition Conservative Party.

"I think it might be appropriate for him to tell us himself just how contrite he now is," added Howard, who is Jewish. He didn't specify how he thought the prince should make the apology.

Home Secretary Charles Clarke, however, said he was satisfied with Harry's statement. "He's apologised and I think we should leave the matter there," he told British Broadcasting Corp radio.

The picture of the 20-year-old prince, youngest son of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, appeared in The Sun newspaper.

In a statement, Harry said he was "very sorry if I caused any offence or embarrassment to anyone."

"It was a poor choice of costume and I apologise," he added.

Jewish groups reacted swiftly to the incident.

"The fact that the palace has issued an apology indicates that this was a mistake by the prince," said Rabbi Jonathan Romain, a spokesman for the Reform Synagogues of Great Britain. "But having being given, the apology should now be accepted."

A spokesman for the Board of Deputies of British Jews said the costume "was clearly in bad taste, especially in the run-up to Holocaust Memorial Day" on January 27. But he added: "The board is pleased that he's apologised for the incident."

The queen will commemorate the Holocaust and 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz by inviting survivors of the Nazi death camps and British World War II veterans who liberated them to a reception at St James' Palace.

Harry, third in line to the throne, has been photographed drinking in London's trendiest nightclubs and three years ago was sent by his father to observe a drug rehabilitation centre after being caught smoking marijuana. In October he scuffled with a paparazzi photographer outside a London nightclub.

I think that too much of a big deal got made bout this in the paper's afterall it was only a fancy dress costume, admittedley it was a poor choice of costume. But I think that because of his stature people are overeacting.

But someone of his stature should know better. Third in line for the throne and he has no tact, common sense or sympathy.

i think thats everything that needs to be said about it..
Yeah words hastily put into his mouth by Daddy and Granny no doubt! Don't get me wrong, I think the whole thing is funny, that's why I posted it. He's one very silly boy.

Exactly. Not only is it disrespectful to the world at large and a poor choice, but whats worse is that he is obviously unable to make good choices, and he's in line to run the country?

And no one in his staff stopped him and perhaps told him it was a mistake to wear the thing?

Speaks volumes about the future of the royal family.

How can this be swept under the carpet with a "oh it was a poor choice and he's sorry comment"

A leader (he's third in line to the throne), should always lead from the front and be an example. No one needs telling of the negativity surrounding the Nazis. The de-humanisation of entire ethnic and religious groups is not a laughing matter in this context.
In addition to this, Harry has been acting like a spoilt brat lately. Frankly if he is representative of what we can expect in the future from the Royal Family, then it's not looking good. this latest antic is just the spark that has brought this issue to the attention of people. the fact that Harry is acting brattish

of course a leader, a member of the royal family should be an example for good behaviour etc, no doubt.
hes obviously not the smartest person which isnt that bad cos i think William is the one who will follow the king (isnt he?).

I dont think Harry was wearing this costume to disrespect any ethnic and/or religious groups. thats why i think apologizing was enough.

I don't think Harry is that stupid that he didn't know that the costume was alittle 'out there'. But that's probably why he did it. He's been acting like an arrogant toff lately and this antic was anotehr in a long line of stupid stunts.

Such overreaction. Let me remind you it was a "fancy dress" party therefore Harry dressed up as a Nazi, what's the problem? It was insensitive I agree but the guy's still only a teenager and was simply trying to make an impression, by the media's reaction you'd swear he'd just signed up for the SS

He's wearing a Nazi uniform now, imagine what he'll do when he inherits the throne...

nothing, because his big brother is the next in line and the royals have no say in the British government.

being from america i just dont understand the whole "royal family" deal....what is their purpose? their decendants of people who ruled england hundreds of years ago? I mean do they have any say whatsoever in regards to the country's politics or do they just prance around and end up in tabloids like prince charles

They're the titualr heads of the country. The King/Queen appoints the Pime Minister and dismisses him, on advice of parliament. They also have a variety of other constitutional roles, thus the UK being known as a "constitutional monarchy".

To you maybe but many other countries are like this. For instance in a number of other European countries; Belgium, Holland, Sweden, Spain etc. the exact same system operates as in England i.e. the King/Queen is the head of state while parliament makes the laws. The royal family can actually play a very constructive role in public affairs if done properly.

it was a "Colonial and Native" costume party, and the nazi uniform was fitting. Poor choice for someone of his stature, but if another person dressed up like that at a party of stead of the prince then it wouldn't be this blown up.
