David Beckham to join LA Galaxy
The football pitch looks certain to take second place to the sales pitch when David Beckham completes his £128m move to US side LA Galaxy.
His exploits with England, Manchester United and Real Madrid have made the boy from Leytonstone a superstar in many parts of the world.
But in the US it's his wife, Victoria, who is the bigger name - thanks not only to her time in the Spice Girls but also to her friendship with A-list celebs like Katie Holmes, Tom Cruise's new wife.
An enormous marketing drive is now being planned by money men hopeful Becks will emulate the spectacular success he has had in fronting adverts for adidas and Gillette in the UK and Europe.
But PR guru Max Clifford has warned Becks has a long way to go to create the kind of profile he enjoys on this side of the Atlantic.
"Football is not big in America, David Beckham is not big in America - football does not mean much," he said.
"The LA Galaxy are not a great team. They would struggle in the first division over here. It is a change of direction... LA is the centre of the movie business, so maybe there is a step towards that direction."
Sky News Entertainment Correspondent Neil Sean said the switch Stateside was a shrewd move for the Beckhams.
"Their brand has died over here," he said. "(Their perfume range) Beckham Instinct bombed because people are bored of them now.
Posh is a bigger name in the US "I think as a brand, he will succeed. As a sports star, maybe not."
He revealed that a documentary is already being planned about the Beckhams' move to the land of the movie superstar.
And according to Sky News Correspondent Matt Smith, even with £20m to spend they may struggle to find a house they like.
"The thing about Beverley Hills ts that there's a lot of people in that price range looking for that sort of thing," one Los Angeles estate agent told him. "They would have to move on anything they liked fairly quickly."
The likes of Madonna and Justin Timberlake have already spoken of their approval at the Beckhams' imminent arrival.
But it remains to be seen whether Becks will make it from the B-team at Real Madrid to the A-list in the United States.
