Technology I wanna build my own PC

#81
So i was about 2 place my final order 2day....my sound card and video card. But then coincidentley i read a review and basically the video card that i'm getting, GeForce 6800GT isn't compatible with the chipset on my mobo, nForce3 250 GB....apparentley it's a driver issue that Nvidea hasn't resolved yet. So that completely sucks cuz now i have 2 go with Radeon....which is ok i guess, i was just really looking forward 2 using Nvidea. Anyway, the GeForce card was $296.....i am now getting the Radeon X850XT...which is $375. So yea....gonna have 2 save up just a LITTLE bit more =(. Just updating you guys.

P.S. about the fans....since there's no specific place 2 put the extra ones...do you just "force" screw them in2 your case? i guess CREATE a hole 4 the screws

ok ok, so i started tinkering with the case yesterday...installed the new psu (the one it came with kinda sucked) and while i was in there , i put in a new fan...and looked around and came up with the conclusion that there has 2 be a space already made 4 any additional fans in the case already. for example, there's a space in the front part of the case 4 a fan...which is where i'll put it. That should be enough...one in the back, one on the side, and one in the front....plus the psu itself has 3 fans. So i guess that's that.

On another note, while i was in there i started thinking ahead and then it dawned on me.....what do i do with those pieces that are covering the Disc Drive space, for example? You know when u buy a new case, everything is all covered up...so my question is, do i just punch out these little "doors"? Do i cut them out somehow with a special tool/knife?

hopefully this gives you a better idea if i wasn't descriptive enough

as you see...there are 4 spaces for disc drives and 2 spaces for floppy drives i guess....and they're all covered up with those "doors" or panels.

hey wassup guys....giving u guys an update. I'm almost done...and i really mean that this time. My final piece is my video card....and that's in the mail..so it's on its way. Figured i might as well start putting the pieces 2gether so when my video card arrives all i have 2 do is put that last piece on.

So here's what i've done so far.....put in new power supply unit, put in the new light up fans, just finished putting in the motherboard and the processor.

So this is why i immedietley came here.....i have a question about that...i put it in and everything, but i noticed that underneath the heatsink , the part that's directly in contact with the processor chip....it was like some kinda weird "cement" stuff on it. I touched a small part of it...and yea, it was like a cement kinda material, or clay. Uhm......what's that about? i touched a small corner of it....should i have not?

also, what's this port for ?? IEEE 1394

IEEE 1394 is a firewire port for digtal video camera and external hard drives etc.

the cement shit is thermal grease and ensures a good thermal connection to aid the transfer of heat from the processor to the heatsink.

thanks yo ^^^

ok...so i put most of everything 2gether 2day...cept for my video card which is on it's way of course....and i came across these power connectors ......that i don't know what the hell they're for...any ideas??

#93
yea...that's exactly what i thought cuz my hard drive has a space 4 that connector and it fits and everything. But it also has a 4 pin connector on it....so i connected that 2 it....and it struck me odd 2 connect 2 different connectors to the hard drive....so i just left the 4 pin one connected.

ok yea...figured out it was another way 2 power the HD....apparently i use one or the other, not both.

So...........guess what guys, i recieved my video card 2day!! Which is my final piece.....well kinda, i ended up having 2 order a 24 pin to 20 pin converter ; / So that's on it's way 2. But yea...i'm about 2 go put in the video card....being that i'm so close.....i have one last thing (hopefully) 2 ask of you guys 4 help....can u guys list for me i guess the order in which i should do stuff??

For example, i have an idea that goes like this......

Use Bootup disk and install OS
install motherboard drivers
Sound Drivers
Video Drivers
etc

a small part of me however thinks that i should put in the motherboard drivers 1st....don't know why , don't even think it would work without an OS....

I would install all the hardware first then install the OS. It will be a good indication if the drivers are compatible with the OS. If not check the manufacturer website and update your drivers. Make sure you update everything. That's how I would personally do it.

hey wassup guy, sorry i haven't updated u guys in a really long time..

Well......it's done guys!! And I owe alot of this successful project 2 you guys, my 2pac board bredren. I recieved my final piece , the video card about 2 weeks ago, installed the OS...all Drivers and everything works great. Had a few minor set backs during the 1st day, but those were easily taken care of. I shall be posting up pics soon so stay tuned.

Once again, thanks everybody, couldn't have done it without u guys. :thumb: =)
