Technology I wanna build my own PC

i haven't decided about the video card just yet.....and i've been meaning 2 ask about pci express and just regular old pci slots...as in, what's the difference?

Also, looking at this mobo

DFI LANPARTY UT nF3 250Gb Socket 754 NVIDIA nForce3 250 ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail

I know the first thing you'll realize is that it's a 754 socket, I'm getting this just cuz from what i've read, paired up with the right processor and video card, this can work just as fast and powerful than most things out there. Also that the 939 ones that i saw are great, but it was hard 2 find a good processor 2 match up with it....they were either too expensive or just too low 4 me....like 2.0 Ghz and such. But i guess i shouldn't really look at that huh.

Anyway, my question is the "250 GB" part in the name....what's that supposed 2 represent? My initial thought was that , that's the amount of Hard Drive space it supports....in that case, what does that mean 4 me since i got a 320 GB HD?

this kinda goes along with this question....but it goes for the "Nvidia" part of the name....does this mean i can ONLY get a Nvidia video card? Cuz i would really like 2 stick with Radeon.

The 250GB part doesnt mean anything with regards to hard drive space limit. its talking about the video chipset on the board which is an NVIDIA nForce3 250.And it also doesnt mean you can only use NVIDIA,all it means is that it has an already built in NVIDIA chip on the mobo as the default video adapter.

just updating u guys, i just recieved my mobo and processor 2day......and i can't wait. Just sucks that i have 2 go 2 work so i won't be able 2 start building until 2morrow. Anyway, i was thinking about putting in the mobo and then the processor. But is it easier 2 put the processor in first and THEN put in the mobo? Or does not really matter?

thanks yo, and thanks everybody else......5 pages deep and i really appreciate all the input everybody has given me.

the questions might never end...lol.....but uhm, been reading on configuring my hard drive and all that...and Raid 0 and Raid 1......what's that?

You use raid when dealing with two or more hard drives in your system. You can set these options so if one of your drives fails the data wont be lost on 2nd drive. Prolly just leave it at 0 unless you are putting more than one drive in it.

oh...no way man...lol...i'm waiting on my next check. I have this thing of having AT LEAST $1000 in my bank account...it bothers me if i go under that. So i COULD'VE bought everything at once, but it woulda bothered me....so with my next check i should have the final pieces.

all i need is a video card, sound card, DVD/CD RW Drive, and Floppy Drive. I'll keep u guys posted.

it's cool..... i did however wanna at least START putting the stuff 2gether...my mobo, processor, fans.......but i keep reading about static electricity and blah blah blah....and i would feel uncomfortable having put some of it 2gether and then just have it sitting there until the next pieces arrive. So i figured i'm better off just waiting and leaving them in their plastic bag thing that's supposed 2 "protect" it from Static.

Yeah dood always leave the stuff in the static plastic bag until you are ready to install it. Also make sure you ground youself by touching a peice of metal in your case or elsewhere so you wont shock everthing. lol. :D

I can do this too. :)

I can build computers. pieces by pieces. give me all the pieces and i will build it in 20 mins and with its all installation i be done no more then an hour. :)

I learned lil bit when i went back to my country back in june so im not as lost as i use to be. although i still sometimes mess up my PC.

this might be selfish and maybe i shouldnt be asking this here but i dont want you guys to see ANOTHER thread by me here but my old computer, i wanted to get the hard drive from there and put on my new computer but the old computers sockets wouldnt match my new computer so i wasnt able to do that. so what do i do? i wanna copy some of my files from my old hard drive to my present computer but the sockets dont match.

ok back to your thread.

You could try converting it to an external USB/firewire hard drive using a hard drive enclosure kit.

Hey guys, updating....just 2 more parts....video card and sound card....should have them by next week Friday or so. Anyway, also got some new questions......this first question i have 2 ask 4 forgiveness first cuz i'm asking this without really looking at the case very well nor the mother board. So when i put the motherboard into the case....do it screw it in? Glue it in? and if i screw it in....am i supposed 2 just screw THROUGH the metal plate? (see pic)

2nd question is, i read here and there something about "jumpers" i think mostly for hard drives. then the other night my friend mentioned something similar where i need something 2 kinda "jump start" the computer...or a part of the computer. Almost like when medics are trying 2 "jump start" a heart with those electric pads. Anybody know anything about this?

The mother board has screw holes on it along with inside the case. You can see them in the picture of the case. There are jumpers on the harddrive, motherboard, dvdrom, and cd-rw. About jump starting, never heard of such. lol.

lol...oh ok, thanks...guess they all took the word "jumper" a lil bit 2 far. So is it the same thing with any extra fans i wanna put in? Should i look for screw holes on the top or in the front or wherever i wanna put them in? Or do i just end up having 2 screw the fans in wherever i want?

You can basicly put the fans where you want. There are no specific places or atleast my case's didnt have specific places to put them.
