how much did you spend total? I'm aiming for $1,000 or less.

Mine cost like 950 total. Remember that you will have to set the jumpers for your hard drive, motherboard, cdrom/cw. Also, USB ports are on the mother board and most cases have a few in the front. If you havent ordered your mother board yet you should look for a cpu/motherboard combo. Putting a processor on a motherboard can be tricky. You will also need to purchase a heatsink and fan for the cpu, most of the time they dont come with them. Another thing is you have to make sure you dont hookup any wire to a motherboard that is not suppose to go there. It will fry it, I have done it before when I first started building. And the case is nice, did it come with a power supply? If you want a gaming processor AMD athlon 64 bit ones are the future for gaming. They are the charge right now but will get cheaper. You might wanna read some reviews or whatever on those.

yea, the case comes with a psu but from what i read in the reviews, it's not enough. I mean technically it is, but it's just somewhat limited and if u wanna add an extra fan or 2, you're better off buying another psu.

gonna skip ahead here and ask, once my system is done....and i turn on the power, what will i see? an MS Dos prompt? and at that point i just insert my OS Disc 2 install?

no, you wont see a ms dos prompt because theres nothing on the hard drive. what you want to do is boot from a boot disk or boot cd. so get yourself a windows xp boot cd or boot disks. then once you're in the os setup, you need to set your partitions and format the drive. then you install it.

thanks ^^^

i just recieved my case, hard drive and some fans i ordered. I'm ready 2 just get started and insert the hard drive and put in the fans....but uhm, should i just wait til i have all the pieces (mobo, proc, etc)? Cuz i don't wanna install something and then have 2 uninstall it in order 2 put something else first instead. But i figure something like the fans shouldn't be that big of a deal...i'm more concerned about the hard drive.

basically, is there a particular order i should install the parts?

Also another question (sorry guys) , uhm, what am looking for, what specification should look for i guess in mobo's for the amount of RAM i wanna put. For example, I have a Dell now, and the Dell technician said that my computer only allows up to 1 gig of RAM. So for my new computer that i'm building...i wanna be able 2 put in 2 gigs or RAM. So what should i look out for that will allow me 2 do so?

Just make sure the mobo has two dimm slots for ram then you can put one 1 gig sticks of ram in each. Most mobo's have two slots anyway. Also you can install the parts in any order you want to really. Just dont power it on until everything is installed. And like big mack was saying if you have XP then you can boot from the cd then you will have two format the drive because it is brand new then create a partition and windows will guide you through the rest of the OS installation. You will only need a boot disk if the OS is like windows 98 or some crap.

i have a question about heatsinks.....what category would u put them under? Necassary? Highly Recommended? or It would help but don't really have 2 have it?

Your processor will burn up without one. No way around it. It is a must.

so i just got my check yesterday and i'm ready 2 order my next "order"...which is my processor and mobo. From what i've been reading, it would probably be best if i get a processor and mobo that use the same kinda socket right??

Also, is it safe 2 say that AMD outperforms Intel right now?

cool, i already had a good mobo and processor paired up in my shopping cart, but then i went ahead and took your advice and started looking into a 939 socket, (right now i had a 754 socket in the cart) but the highest frequency i've seen in 939 is about 2.0 Ghz.....i mean i did see this one running at like 3.0 but that was also an FX series running at like $1,000 so uhm, that's kinda outta the question..lol.

the thing is though that every review i read says that a 2.0 Ghz AMC processor will outperform a 3.0 Ghz Intel processor....which boggles my mind. I just don't understand how that's possible....i don't doubt it at all, everybody seems 2 say that, i just can't comprehend it...lol.

yea im going with the AMD FX processor, lots of horsepower for gaming.

for CPU speed,check out

http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20050627/athlon_fx57-06.html

look at the benchmark results. they compare different amd and intel processors, from the 2.4Ghz range up.you can then see how speed of AMD compares to Intel. When you go to that link, they are comparing games, just press the next button at the bottom, then it will bring you to different benchmarks such windows programs,to openGL tests and so forth.

by the way, clock speeds aren't a faithful indicator of CPU performance,so you must look at other factors of the CPU before making a decision.

939 is an update to 754, so if u get that you will be able to upgrade in future.

I can't afford a FX they wayyy expensive...so ill wai for the dual core 4000+

Post those links up of what you are getting if you dont mind. ;)

Also, are you going with pci express or agp videocard?

i haven't decided about the video card just yet.....and i've been meaning 2 ask about pci express and just regular old pci slots...as in, what's the difference?

Also, looking at this mobo

DFI LANPARTY UT nF3 250Gb Socket 754 NVIDIA nForce3 250 ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail

I know the first thing you'll realize is that it's a 754 socket, I'm getting this just cuz from what i've read, paired up with the right processor and video card, this can work just as fast and powerful than most things out there. Also that the 939 ones that i saw are great, but it was hard 2 find a good processor 2 match up with it....they were either too expensive or just too low 4 me....like 2.0 Ghz and such. But i guess i shouldn't really look at that huh.

Anyway, my question is the "250 GB" part in the name....what's that supposed 2 represent? My initial thought was that , that's the amount of Hard Drive space it supports....in that case, what does that mean 4 me since i got a 320 GB HD?

thanks alot 4 the site, it gave me a better understanding on how they compare.

oh and i guess from looking at the mobo you see i'm going with agp. Mind telling me what are the advantages or disadvantages to using agp or pci express??

Pci express is supposely the future of video cards. AGP cards only have an 8x bus which is referring to the amount of data that can be passed through it. Its like 2 gigs a second or around that number. Pciexpress cards go up 16x or 4 gigs a second. They are also 64 bit. I dont really see a difference yet, they are still in developement on making it better. I do see alot of motherboards that are using it. I havent had a chance to actually test it out. My AGP 9800 pro is unbeleivable at 1280x1200 resolution. UT03 is looking amazing and I get over a hundred FPS online. I wont go pciexpress for a few years prolly.
