Delaying iOS 7 is stupid. That tells me that someone at the company was like this upgrade isn't going to work we need this and this, delay the upgrade and rush these ideas so we can get our new fresh iOS 7 out there. Bad. They should just go on with iOS 7 as it was planned and bring the ui overhaul when it was ready, not rushed. Just shows again that Apple is playing catch up

I can see that point, but time is of the essence at this point. They fucked up twice in a row with the 4S and the 5. Neither were huge upgrades, like the iPhone 4 was. They have always done major updates a year apart. They've shrunk it a bit to be more like every eight months, which is still fast, so if they are close to having it done now, but release 7 without it anyway, they'd either release 8 in the Fall, which would be weird, or they would wait until the Holidays to release it, at the earliest.

Like you said, if they are playing catch up, "release it when it's done" wouldn't be good for right now.

Frankly the 4S and 5 had very good hardware inside of them. The chips were decent upgrades. Not the best performing but great at being fast enough while being cheap and energy efficient, and the GPUs were actualy very fast. The problem is with external design and lack of software innovation.

Was the 4S not a 1Ghz CPU, underclocked to 800, or something?

Apple GPU performance always trounces the competition. Whether it be in the tablet or the phone market. My statement was regarding the delayed move to dual and then quad core CPUs.

And then when it came to software, like I said, iOS has gone stale. It's the same shit and they have been playing catch up with Android in the software department for a while. It's just that now the gap in hardware with Android OEMs is starting to be more obvious too making Apple 0-2 now. The only thing they may lead in is a subjective category, which would be design/aesthetics. But even that design has gone lame as well.

The iPhone 5 looks like a relic when placed next to the HTC One and Galaxy S4. Those both look like modern phones, the iPhone does not.

The iPhone hasn't changed its design since like...2010. No shit it's gonna look outdated. They got lazy with it and instead started adding software features they thought people would like.

I wonder if Apple will venture into the phablet scene now. The Note was a real success and they'd be dumb to let that market go to Samsung as well.

Lots of people seem to like the look of the HTC One. Personally I think ok but not that special. Also it feels a little clunky in hand, like a metal toy.
In real life the S4 will have an edge thanks to more modern look, the bezels are much smaller. The HTC One is bigger than the S4 while packing a significantly smaller screen, it'll look old quick.

Yeah, but it was basically a move from the 1ghz single core ARM Cortex A8 to dual core ARM Cortex A9, so the performance jump was still about 200%. The GPU performance jump was the biggest for any Iphone though. Earlier Iphones had sub-par GPUs compared to competition. The 4S started the trend of Iphones having very decent GPUs.
Also, 4S had the first really good camera Iphones had, it was the same unit Xperia Arc had.
The 4S was almost on par with the Galaxy S2 hardware-wise. Sure a little slower, smaller screen etc. etc. but almost there.

I see. I know the iPads have the decked-out GPUs that thrash every competitor's phone or tablet. I guess that's why gaming on one is so much more fun for many people.

Gaming is more fun because of developers choosing to make huge games for Ipads, and not Android. Frankly, every single GPU that any flagship phone this year packs maxes out 60fps Full HD graphics benchmarks. There are no games that come close to using those resources so each high end Android GPU is a severe overkill as far as games go.

The Ipads had to use faster GPUs because of higher display resolution, now since phones are getting close to that screen resolution they are also packing GPUs that are of comparable performance.

I see. Yeah, I bet those Retina displays just suck the power from the battery.

Which makes me wary of the Mini, if it decides to get the Retina display as well. I would never be the guinea pig for a new display whether on an iPad or the MacBooks. I may have to skip the next Mini if it has Retina for that reason. Although, I suppose the 4 didn't have issues when it introduced with the Retina display. But the rMBPs do have their fair share of issues, according to some sites.

Yeah, I heard something today about Foxconn leaking that they had to replace up to 8 million faulty new Iphones also. It's a huge cost and surely will delay the new Iphone actually. Also like I mentioned before, the Iphone has become ridiculously behind the competition now and it's super expensive for what it is - it is and looks worse than an average mid-end Android phone these days so really they'd have to step up and innovate in a major way to make the new Iphone a reasonable buy.
