But some people also are both - they don't know what to do when they are 23 and when they are 40 they still don't know what they really want to do - they are left with no perspectives.

I think that there's never too late to find what you really love and picking something else earlier doesn't interrupt that, it even helps you with discovering yourself. It's better to do anything, study something and then discover that it was not for you and do something else than sit and do nothing productive. One of my friends has diplomas from 3 different universities with 3 totally different majors (IT,geology and public security if I remember correctly). Now he discovered that his first thought was the best one and that's what he wants to do.
