Are you good at it?

I have to admit that I hate it even though I have shitloads of it at my university. I mean I like maths itself, the concept behind it and how perfect it is but learning maths is really frustrating to me. Same as programming or algorithmics and data structures. Funny thing is that I'm better with higher maths starting with discrete mathematics than more basic mathematic analysis. I always hated algebra.
I though I was better than an average mortal man. I knew that I will suck compared to other people at my uni but seriously I have met some math geniuses here.
Last week I invited a friend (who seemed to be the least nerdy guy from my group), we played old school Dreamcast games looking for an inspiration (he translated the Japanese Shenmue and Sonic for me), then some ass kick with street fighter and then.. I decided to bump some music. He's not into rap music so I bumped some random 90s compilation. I use winamp and after starting a playlist it automatically sets itself to full screen and displays random visualisations that change with the music every few seconds.
What amazed me that this dude instantly knew the function used to generate each visualisation. He simply had it in his mind and believe me that these are not simple things. For a normal person these are just some random objects of various colors moving, some might also notice a loop and some basic reoccurring patterns but no, he had a whole formula the second he saw it.
I couldn't believe so I told him to write it all down and compare it to the algorithm used in those visualisations.. after checking codes I found out that he was right with all of them. People like him really amaze me.

a fast reply. I'd love to like maths, seriously. Just its learning process is killing me. Sometimes I wonder why I am doing technological studies.

I hate everything about maths, the process, and everything. If I someone told me, I have a choice in becoming a garbage man or a mathematician, i'd say gimme the garbage man job.

I just hate the word "maths" used for "math," like there's more than one. To me it's like saying, I'm studying englishes. I hate histories.

ok I didn't know. I often find english people saying "maths" so I thought it's how it should be spelled.

In the UK it is called "maths," but not in the US and that's the only place that counts (get it), plus (+) it makes more sense.

I respect it, but I loathe it. Never been good at it, either.

No, let's rephrase that. I've always been horrible at it as well. :thumb:

I'm studying Electrical Engineering so everything I do is pretty much maths. But I fairly enjoy maths and love problem solving (nerd?). What I like about maths, is your either wrong or right. Give me a Equation to solve over an essay to write anyday.

I love math, there's something about the perfectness of it that I've never found any where else. I think i'm good at it? I'm in second year calculus and its fairly easy. I know thats probably nothing compared to what some of you do.. /shrug.

I've always managed to do well in math classes but I personally feel that I'm not good at it. I was really good in math up to high school. In high school, as is the case with many students, classes were really just about getting good grades for college and not really learning (as bad as that sounds). That was my approach with my calculus classes - I cheated, took advantage of "tool kits", and did everything I could to get good grades on tests without learning it adequately. However, in college, that wasn't the option and when I took business calculus I actually had to learn again the shit I should have known from like the 10th/11th grade. It was a bit frustrating and definitely killed my pride a little. I feel that I'm OK with math now in my econ/fin classes but I don't have too much confidence in my abilities.

Don't really know. In my school math class eventually splits into strong and weak math. I chose weak math and that's when I started applying myself. I got a 9.7/10 on my final exam but I don't think I would've done well had I taken strong math.
