my itunes says that my ipod needs to be reformatted right, so i was wondering i do reformate will i lose my songs? i have my itunes on manual.

Hitachi or WesternDigital is what I'd look for.

Newegg.com - Computer Hardware,Hard Drives,Internal Hard Drives,1TB and higher,

Buy internal, and get a case off ebay if you have a laptop or don't have the space in your tower - you might save some cash that way.
