Thinking of a new car

I want to get a 2001 Audi A6 2.7T. I'm pretty slow to go through with it at this point cus I'm not sure aobut the turbos in the car being that reliable. At this point they are about 7 years old and I'm thinking they might go out soon. Maybe I'm thinking wrong, not sure. They are in teh price range of about 12k so if oyu think something is better let me know. PEACE!

Factory turbos don't necessarily just break down, especially if they've never been tampered with. It's not something that I'd worry about too much.

That's what I always thought but at the same time I've heard they will start to seize at around 8-10 years depedning on the driver. My mechanic friend told me that and he is in love with Chevy and a foreign hater so he really is just a biased opinion but it doesn't hurt to ask. I've never driven or know anyone who has an Audi so I'm skeptical about the cars. Anyone know anything about em.

The fact of the matter is that die-hard Chevy guys (and pretty much most American car fanatics) have absolutely no faith in imports, four-cylinders, turbocharging, variable valve timing, or pretty much any modern technology used to replace anything from the OG musclecar days. As a side note, a woman who worked in my building was apparently a big Camaro fan, and upon finding out that I was into cars, she stopped by my desk and asked me about cars. I mentioned that I had heard that the upcoming Camaros were going to get four-cylinders as the base motors (as opposed to a V-6), and she immediately scoffed at that and said, "No four-cylinder belongs in ANY Camaro." But little did she know that the turbocharged four-cylinder (a GM product itself) in question is the same 260 hp, 260 lb.-ft unit that powers GM's Pontiac Solstice GXP and Saturn Sky Redline sports convertibles... numbers that not only surpass (by far) every six-cylinder to ever be in a Camaro but also even the V-8s to power the third-gen Camaros up until 1992. Even the LT1 that powered the original fourth-gen Camaros wasn't too far ahead of the new four-cylinder, which is roughly a third the size of that motor while only having a 15 hp deficit.

So what I'm getting at is that such American gearheads usually don't have much to back up their claims and beliefs, which are based on what may have been the truth over 20 years ago. I don't know too much about the durability of Audi turbos, but my mom drove a 1985 Mercedes 300D Turbo Diesel (a German product like Audi) for 20 years before selling it, and it was still running just fine on the original turbo. I'm sure that the turbo on a German car isn't a huge thing to worry about.

Isn't it the same for audis as for beemers...if they have 50K miles or over, they're too risky and break down...electronics fuck up? plus the cost of parts...

that's the reason I didn't get an A4 a year back.

^ Possibly, but the guy was asking specifically about the turbos' reliability. The electronics is a different story, which is why I said that the turbos aren't something you should worry too much about.

Nah, the chargers are fine. As long as they haven't been tampered with and the engine itself isn't modified those things should be pretty bulletproof.

I don't think anything on a car is bulletproof, everything has a chance to break. I really didn't even think about the electronics, being I'd install my own system. Then there is the ECU and sensors and on and on and on. I was really hoping someone on here owned one but I guess not. I tried an Audi forum but it wasn't as good as I thought. I should try a competitor forum and then weigh in the worst and best about the car, since I'd get that from the respective forum.

I test drove one yesterday also. Ride was decently smooth. The suspension was surprising cus since the ride was so smooth I was expecting it not to be so good but it was pretty stiff and cornered well. I haven't looked at the skid or anything of em yet so I wasn't sure what to expect. There is hardly any turbo lag noticeable. I'm not sure if it's cus they are pretty weak and runnin very low psi so they don't have to spool that much or if it's cus the system is made that well. The inside was fucking nice is all I'm gonna say regarding that. Well actually the seats were stiffer than I expected so that kind of sucked. This guy is asking for 12 so I'm really considering it. Imma do some more research first.

Turbo lag is overrated. Sure, a 1982 911 Turbo had a lot of it, but that was 20 years ago.

^ Yup. The only time you really have turbo lag in a turbocharged car without a lot of displacement for its cylinder count is usually in top gear at a really low rpm.

In High School all I was around was turbo'd Civics, Integras, etc etc. They had a lot of lag.

^ But that's a different story. Those cars were given the aftermarket treatment. Cars with turbos off the assembly line don't really suffer from it as much.
