i sort of agree, but i actually liked pharaoh monch's album.

basically, anyone who thinks there is a recipe for a hiphop song is wrong, so i can't really say i agree. you're basically saying the album is too "fruity", and by that i can only assume you mean too intstrumental, as if there is too much melody. remember that a large portion of people who got into hiphop didn't grow up on old school shit or east shit. a lot of people got into hiphop through westcoast straight jack-sampling and re-playing samples with live musicians. i was one of those. by now i have accepted a way broader span of music, but honestly, that's an opinion i can't really respect lol.

i agree with that music video though. i got the leak edition 1 and 2, 1 was way better than 2 if you ask me, but i lost interest after his album didn't drop (or did it? either way, i lost interest).

I watch one of those "how to recreate a beat" videos on youtube. The guy recreated Kanye's "Through the wire". Seriously, that beat was made up of like 4 samples and some drums & shit, and Kayne talks like his beats are masterpieces, and to top it off, this recreation sounded better.

it's like johnny j. all he would do was cut out a sample and add drums. of course, some times it would get replayed by musicians later on, but it's "cheating" because some people will list a producer as one of their favorites and he's hardly even producing. imo the way this shit is chopped up is really good. it may be simple on kanye's version but it's dope nevertheless. but from a technical point of view i agree with prize, they certainly are nothing crazy. doom and el-p beats are crazy. and while talking about producers who sample a lot, dj shadow is fucking crazy.

People seem to think its ok to sample the life out of a song, its not ok and that is a reason why todays hiphop sucks.

You should go learn some history.

Probably start with Apache. Then move onto The Honey Drippers, maybe Big Beat, you can throw some Bob James in there, can't forget James Brown. Lyn Collins, Isaac Hayes, Melvin Bliss, Sly & The Family Stone, ESG, and so on and so on and so on. Realize this music you are making wouldn't be around if it wasn't for the sample.

i agree with the analogy too sorta, but i don't think the reason why people sample is that it's necessarily "easier" (and when chopping, it is not always). hiphop was built on the concept of sampling, and if i were to assume i gotta guess that's because when hiphop was born it was mostly practiced by poor black folks who didn't own instruments or play any for that matter. piano lessons in the ghetto? a sample to hiphop is like a guitar to rock. it's part of the core.

Nah it was cause DJ Kool Herc had his roots in Jamaica (which is why there's a similarity between reggae and rap) and he took a sample and made it danceable. That's right, Hip-Hop music started as dance music. Lil Jon = pure Hip-Hop (that's directed to the elitist, pretentious fuckers)
