German U-21 player Dejagah refuses to play against Isreal

Ashkan Dejagah (VFL Wolfsburg) denied to take part in a match against Israel. He said that he couldnt play because of "personal reasons". A part of his family is still living in Iran.

At first DFB boss Zwanziger accepted his refusal but after heavy criticism he thinks one more conversation with him his needed.

I think, and thats what most people in germany think, is that he should play because this is sport, its not about policy. If you decide to play for germany, you have to play by the rules. Simple.

It doesnt matter what country you play for. Sports should never be mixed with politics. Iran played the Us in 2002 and politics were set aside so a good game could be played.

That was 98 i think. The game at the group stages of the World Cup where the US and Iran's supporters were hugging and holding hands. I nearly threw up.

I wouldn't consider his fears about the backlash towards his family, who live in Iran, to be "dumb". If he's boycotting it because of his personal feelings toward Israel then I'd agree, but he clearly has concerns about his family.

I also understand that you're not allowed back into Iran if you have an Israeli stamp on your passport, so he wouldn't be able to go back to Iran to see his family. I'd consider that a good enough reason not to go there, it's not his fault that his country hates Israel.
