people discuss the Chris Benoit tragedy as if it were a victory that it wasn't roid rage? For example:

It's almost as if people are saying steroids are a victim of an unwarranted, vicious attack by the media. Do they think steroids are a good thing that should be embraced? Or do they just hate the media that much that they'll take the side against them whenever they can? Or do they think that the incident is somehow now better that Benoit was thinking clearly when he killed his family?

Or do they just equate this with a victory for professional wrestling, using it as "proof" that there's nothing really wrong with the sport regardless of its steroid abuse?

Because the media's coverage of the Benoit case has been ridiculous. Despite all the wrestlers that appeared on TV and explained that the case wasn't about steroids, and how steroids aren't as big a problem in wrestling as a) they used to be, or b) people make out. The media took the Benoit case and tried to crucify the whole wrestling industry, blaming it for the deaths of Nancy and Daniel.

Of course steroids are bad, but that's why the WWE has the wellness programme.

That doesn't change the fact that Benoit had injected an immense amount of testosterone into his system just before the incident, and that anabolic steroids were found in his house, and that there are records that he received 10 months worth of steroids every three to four weeks.

Wrestling doesn't have a steroid problem just like baseball doesn't have a steroid problem. And the WWE's "wellness program" is the equivalent of baseball's steroid testing at the turn of the century.

well the WWE steroid program is a joke, but i gotta agree with illu, so much hype and media attention was given to the steroid issue that it is kind of a relief to find out that it wasn't the key issue here. but that's what the media does, they run with a story whether it's true or not, they don't care as long as it gets them ratings.

The media needs a scapegoat and the journalists don't have degrees in human psychology so they have to stick to their wikipedia knowledge of reasons for murder; ie. steroids.

But, I agree, I don't understand why people feel "relief" to a certain extent that it wasn't steroids. If it wasn't steroid rage, then Benoit was a monster.

but that's why it's a relief to me. i can't speak for anyone else, but i don't want there to be an excuse for what he did. he committed a horrific act and there is nothing to blame it on but him. steroids are just aconvenient excuse to say it wasn't his fault, which is bullshit.

I didn't hear a single news report use steroids to paint Benoit as better man than he was.

It's a "relief" to some people because now they can tell themselves, "Pfew, the steroids didn't cause this, and now I don't have to worry about any of the other wrestlers I admire or cheer for doing the same thing."

no, but blaming steroids is what the media has been doing ever since this case broke, and as long as that was an issue his supporters were using that as an excuse, saying he'd never do that, it had to be roids that made him crazy. now we can say it wasn't the roids, he was a killer plain and simple. no excuses. but this is only my own feelings, like i said i can't speak for what others think
