when your gas gauge lamp (or whatever it's called) lights up and when you're pretty much at Empty, how far can you car travel before it stops due to lack of fuel?

It depends on the car, but it typically comes on when you start dipping into your reserve tank, which is what varies... in my old E320, the reserve tank was roughly 1.7 gallons (from what I remember), whereas in my brother's Civic, the reserve tank is under a gallon... but keep in mind the differences in fuel consumption between the two cars. If you HAVE to, you could go 20+ miles from when the light first comes on (though sometimes it goes on and off for the first couple miles), but if you drive that far, I'd start seriously looking for a gas station. Don't make a habit of running on fumes, since it can be bad for your fuel system in the long run.

On top of that, it will have to work harder to suck down the gas. Also, your fuel filters will get dirtier and your fuel injectors have a greater chance of getting clogged. Throughout the lifespan of a car, little particles of dirt may find their way into your fuel tank, and if you run well into the reserve tank, the dirt sits at the bottom, and you risk sucking the dirt into the system.

This happened to me a little bit ago. I was drivin around on E a lot for about 3 months straight and the car started actin real weird. If you have ever ran out of gas you know the jerking feeling the car gets well my car started doin that regularly, shit sucked. Don't drive on E, so bad.

I do this shit all the time. I can drive to work and back with the light on and that it about 26 miles total.

Still, though, it makes no difference. In the end you're paying for the petrol you burned up. It matters not if there's 3 milliliters or 45 gallons left.

And seeing that, when overdone, that shit is simply bad for your car, I suggest you lot stop being such incredible cheapskates and just fill her up.

ffs, it's cheap as hell in the states anyway.
