The rule of thumb is, if you're attending a school, it's a good way to socialize with people. Now, if you're not, and most of your friends DON'T use it and your friends WON'T be convinced to use it, then I see don't much of a point. But, hey you can have a facebook account to interact with streethop people, I guess.
