College students??? I got a question...

aight so im an incoming freshman, so i dont know a whole lot... but im usre most schools, in the US at least, limit you to a max. of 18 credit hours.... well, i got 17... im sure all the smart, valedictorian kids are gonna be taking the 18,o but i wasnt sure about my 17... is 17 really pushing it to the high end?

my schedule is kinda like this...

Calc 3
Chem
Chem Lab
Intro. to psych
Microeconomics
and world history


i just hope im not screwing myself over...

Unless you are super smart and don't plan on doing anything but school work and homework.... you screwed yourself. The max I've taken at once was 16 and I mixed hard classes in with some easy ones. It was still stressful as hell. Then again, I was also working full time. If you're only going to go to school, it might not be so bad for you.

max i've done is 7 courses. and there was some easy course with some majoy ones. i think you're screwed unless you really want to spend oyur time studying.

well, freshman are kinda fucked when it comes to course selection since you're limited to just the core courses... a 31 on your english section of your ACT passes you out of eng. comp. 1, but EC2 was allready filled up for this semester since itwas offered like.. 3 times..

still, i think i can handle it, but i dont know how tough these classes are gonna be...

and synful, fortunately i dont have to work, although i might... but def. not full time... im sure you had special circumstances though, so that's fine...

i guess im ok.. i took ap micro and ap chemistry my senior year, but didnt bother with the ap test since i felt i was gonna suck.... so i guess two classes should be ok... calc seems ok too, i can grasp math.... hopefully..

thanks for the help though.. if anyone has anymore suggestions... now that AM is back and attends THE UNC, i wanna hear from him... how the smart man himself does it... AM?

It is imperative that you drop a class, because yes, you are screwing yourself over.

Psyc will be a breeze, and macro shouldn't have a heavy workload, but the others...it'll be too much, especially for a freshman.

Chem + Chem Lab + Calc 3 = full workload

You'll probably have homework every other day in chem, a lab report every week for chem lab, and homework every day for calc 3. it's no joke. even if you can handle the material, it's still going to take a shit ton of time to get it all done.

Unless you need the class for your major, drop the world history and take it later. You'll probably have at least 20-30 pages to write for that outside of your exams, and when you're doing nightly homework for two classes and writing a 10 page (conservative estimate) lab report each week, that's a lot.

Don't drop the Calc, because I'm assuming you need it, otherwise you wouldnt be signed up for it to begin with. And if you need Calc 3, best to not break up your math classes--keep it fresh in your mind. Ditto to chem. If you're signed up for chem and don't need it for your major, you need to get punched in your face.

You are taking too much. I've seen students take that much and do fine, but you really don't want to stress yourself out and take up so much free time. You want to take the first quarter and have time to socialize with people because it's the only time people are exceptionally friendly. Take 15 credits. First quarter of Freshman year is critical in establishing confidence. It tells you that you belong there. Now, most likely, you will do terrible in Calculus. You'll realize that you're not as smart as you thought you were and that high school calc is not as similar to college calculus as you once thought. The rule of thumb is that if you took calculus in high school, you should take pre-cal in college. Some instructors have told me that UW's calculus classes are a bit more difficult than in other institutions, so I could be wrong.

Judging by your selection of calculus and chemistry, your advisor most likely asked you whether you wanted to do engineering, biology, pre-med or shit of that sort. You probably said yes. That's the problem there. First two quarters, I took classes that I LIKED AND WAS INTERESTED IN, so I could get a sense of what I wish to major in. I took comparative politics, social and psychological behavior, and a music class. My advisor wanted me to take math, english, and some bullshit. Fuck you is what I said. People put their mind on engineering and end up wasting their whole school year before realizing that engineering is not for them.

^ Truth, except for the Calc part. Yes, you'll do pretty terrible in it, but you don't necessarily need to take a lower Calc. The truth is that Calc 2 is more difficult than Calc 3--Calc 2 is the most failed class at UNC, Dook, and NC State. If you don't have to take Calc 2 in college, then don't. Take Calc 3 and just try to pass it. The class will probably do way too much material way too fast for you to keep up, but I like your chances of taking just Calc 3 better than of taking Calcs 1 through 3.
