Exploding glass

I dont know what happened, Ive been working out this morning so my body was hot and the air is cold, maybe that has something to do with it. But I went upstairs and grabbed for an empty glass out of the cupboard and it just exploded in my hand as I took it down.

The top just shattered and flew everywhere.

Fucking weird.

That shit happened to me but with a beer on two seperate occasions. Went and picked up the beer from the cooler and the bottom of it just broke off. Really weird shit really!

Ikea just had a recall on some vases that were seemingly "exploding" for no reason... the bottom would just fall off or something it was stated.

many reasons and/or possibilities, i've seen it happen before to not only glass but ceramics too.

BTW it has been cold lately actually, even QLD is gettin' slightly chilli.

hmm, you see for glass to explode, the glass needs to be hot and then come into contact with something cold. It explodes because heat makes the particles in the glass shrink, when it becomes cold at a fast speed, the particles expand and cause the glass to explode.

Maybe you gripped the glass too hard or something.

Of course i do. But I decided not to explain because I knew you'd be expecting me to.

Ok, since you need it so bad. Glass is very brittle. It needs to be tempered or annealed, heated and cooled to reduce internal stress. If there's a flaw in the enamel matrix when the glass is made, something which is pretty common and which can't be seen, over time the glass will eventually get more and more brittle from temperature shifts, vibrations, and clinking it against other glass or dishware, until the glass reaches a critical point and fails.

It's just like if you let water drip into a container drop by drop, eventually one drop will be all it takes to overflow the container. For this situation, Rukas touching the glass was that one drop too many. The vibration of the touch (or perhaps heat from his hand) was enough, more than enough, to make the glass explode at its weakest point. So he could have touched the bottom and the top could have broken off. That's where the flaw would have been. Often a glass will "explode" without being touched. Because it's at it's breaking point and a temperature change or vibration is one too many.

And a tiny chip in a windshield should be fixed as soon as possible for it can grow with time and just shatter.

Was it something you got new recently or have you had it for awhile? Perhaps it was something that had a defect...thats so weird.
