He's the emcee, I'm the rapper...

In the words of KRS-One and other various legends...

"an emcee is not only a music artist but also an ambassador to the culture which is hip-hop. Representing hip-hop to the fullest through talents which spread way beyond 16's and hooks".

"now a rapper is a dude who has flow but what he represents is corporate interest. He may know as much about the hip-hop culture as Bill Cosby does the emo"

"an emcee can be a rapper, but a rapper can never be an emcee"

If you had to place certain people within hip-hop as either rappers or emcee's especially in today's market then who would be in what? Is Kanye West an emcee? Is Lil' Wayne a rapper?

To me KRS is like that old man we all know that lectures us about "back in my day, we wore our pants tight" or something equally as silly.

I dunno maybe KRS is full of shit, maybe he isn't. All I know is that he was doing the whole emcee thing when most of us were still half sperm/half eggs. I'd take his views and opinions concerning hip-hop over anyone on here thats for sure.

KRS aint full of shit. He's a legend in the game. You gotta respect his views on hip hop cuz he's been doing it since like 7 said we were half sperm half egg. What he's saying makes sense. Does that mean you have to use his definition of emcee and rapper as an universal definition, no not necissarily. But you gotta give him his props for being oneof the heads that can actually speak on something like that cuz of his experience.

And to me, Kanye, and lil wayne are both just rappers according to KRS's definition of one. But according to that definition its hard to have a major record deal and still be an emcee. According that, generally u gotta be underground or independent to be an emcee, or atleast thats how i'm looking at it.

Anyways it aint like what KRS said was the word of God, its just his opinion, and it just so happens that when it comes to hip hop, i respect his a bit more than some others

KRS-One is full of shit, and he is a hypocrite. I dont give a fuck how long he has been doing whatever, that just means his dad busted a nut before mine. Cool, glad, he's older, woopty woop.

Come on, dude got into a public beef with Nelly and LOST.

First he says:
"Rap is something we do, hip-hop is something you live."

Now he says
"now a rapper is a dude who has flow but what he represents is corporate interest. He may know as much about the hip-hop culture as Bill Cosby does the emo"

This guy tries to put labels on things to give himself some sort of authority but he doesnt know what the fuck he is talking about.

Follow me now; "rap is something you do," rap is part of Hip-Hop, a rapper RAPS, therefore a rapper is part of Hip-Hop and represents HIP-HOP.

Is KRS going to go back on his old word and say "MCing is something you do, Hip-Hop is something you live"? Come on, this guy has major double standards and contradicts himself all the time to make it appear like he is some sort of major authority.

I have major respect for KRS-One and for what he DID, but in the words of Eddie Murphy, Hip-Hop needs to ask KRS "What have you do for me lately?!"

Firstly by public beef if you meant in terms of popularity in the current age then yes KRS lost but who here actually heard the disses he put out? If anyone actually believes Nelly's 'Roc The Mic Remix' verse dissin' KRS was better then KRS 'Real Hip-Hop' song then it's time to close the site down man and open a new one called StreetPop.com.

What came first the chicken or the egg? I don't know but I can tell you right now that an emcee came out before a rapper did and that there was no such thing called a "rapper" until mainstream America caught on to hip-hop and realized it was a profitable business.

I think you don't know what you're talking about. It's funny because I see Kris' views and opinions on hip-hop then I see someone like Ra's then someone like Com's then someone like Tip's and their almost identical. What has KRS done lately? What has 'Pac done lately? What have the Rolling Stones done lately? It doesn't matter because what they DID still has a relevancy in today's world.

Don't believe me then what's this site about? What do you do on the mic? or on stage?

But you are right a rapper does rap hence he is part of hip-hop, hopefully one day you so-called fans of rap will wake up and realize that Wayne, 50, so and so, such and such are nothing more then gangstered out versions of MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice who can make music so appealing by making the same 4 songs over and over and over and over and well, you get the drift.

Nelly's "Number 1" was better than both. And there is a lot to be said for actually having your songs HEARD; maybe if nobody wanted to listen to KRS it just goes to show he isnt that relevant to TODAYS Hip-Hop culture.

Really? Until mainstream American caught onto Hip-Hop? So you're telling me that Hip-Hop was mainstream in 1979? "Rappers Delight" ring a bell?

I think you don't know what you're talking about. It's funny because I see Kris' views and opinions on hip-hop then I see someone like Ra's then someone like Com's then someone like Tip's and their almost identical. What has KRS done lately?
Nothing.

What has 'Pac done lately?
Nothing, thats why this is StreetHop.com and not 2PacBoard.com. The difference is Tupac doesnt try to preach his outdated definition of Hip-Hop, KRS One does, and contradicts himself.

What have the Rolling Stones done lately? It doesn't matter because what they DID still has a relevancy in today's world.
Sure, but the Stones dont sit there and criticize current rock groups and try to beef with them for progressing past their sound. The Stones know their place in HISTORY and are happy with it, KRS still somehow thinks he is the future.

That's such a lame statement to say, Wayne and 50 are nothing like Ice or Hammer, NOTHING!

Number 1 was a lead single from the Training Day soundtrack ofcourse its gonna get heard, Real Hip-Hop wasn't even recorded until a few months after KRS initially performed it as he used to when he did gigs/live shows. Today's hip-hop culture doesn't exist, the real hip-hop culture disappeared after 1997 and got scattered through out the UG.

Emcee's (MC, Master of the Ceremony) have been around since the 20's man. When certain people would entertain the crowds before the bands came up by either doing melodies or just saying things like "put your hands up and clap". Then there's James Brown the 1st real emcee, rhyming on songs unlike no other previously. Rapper's Delight was a massive single and hit. it was a huge founding block to hip-hop. But their was songs before it in the form of Afrika Bambaataa and DJ Kool Herc, with the emcee coming out to entertain the crowd before those legendary DJ's hit the set. (I suggest you check the DVD "The MC").

Whats an out-dated definition of hip-hop? A DJ? An MC? A Graf artist and a B-Boy/Breaker? Not forgetting clothing, block parties and other things that came along with those 4 elements. How are they out-dated? It's mostly the same, only a few MC's can actually grab the attention of a crowd and move it these days as compared to the rapper who spits his shit and bumps on out.

KRS doesn't think he is the future man. He gives as many props as anyone, Bis? Props. Wu? Props. Pac? Props. Big? Props. His statements are more so aimed at the Chingy's and 50 Cent's.

50's nothing like Hammer? We'll I'll take you to the candy shop after we leave this amusement park.
