(CNN) -- The Virginia Tech police chief said at least 20 people were killed in twin shootings on the Blacksburg campus Monday morning.

"Some victims were shot in a classroom," Chief Wendell Flinchum said, adding that the gunman was dead.

"Today the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions," said university President Charles Steger. "The university is shocked and indeed horrified."

The attacks mark the worst school shooting incident since 1999 when Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris killed 12 students and a teacher before killing themselves at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado.

A hospital spokeswoman told The Associated Press that 17 Virginia Tech students were being treated for gunshot wounds and other injuries.

Sharon Honaker at the Carilion New River Valley Medical Center told CNN that four patients had been transported there, one in critical condition.

One person was killed and others were wounded at multiple locations inside a dormitory about 7:15 a.m., Flinchum said. Two hours later, another shooting at Norris Hall, an engineering building, resulted in multiple casualties, the university reported. (Watch police, ambulances hustle to the scene )

The first reported shooting occurred at West Ambler Johnston Hall, a co-ed dormitory that houses 895 students. The dormitory, one of the largest residence halls on the 2,600-acre campus, is located near the drill field and stadium.

Amie Steele, editor-in-chief of the campus newspaper, said one of her reporters at the dormitory reported "mass chaos."

The reporter said there were "lots of students running around, going crazy, and the police officers were trying to settle everyone down and keep everything under control," according to Steele.

Kristyn Heiser said she was in class about 9:30 a.m. when she and her classmates saw about six gun-wielding police officers run by a window.

"We were like, 'What's going on?' Because this definitely is a quaint town where stuff doesn't really happen. It's pretty boring here," said Heiser during a phone interview as she sat on her classroom floor.

Student Matt Waldron said he did not hear the gunshots because he was listening to music, but he heard police sirens and saw officers hiding behind trees with their guns drawn.

"They told us to get out of there so we ran across the drill field as quick as we could," he said.

Waldron described the scene on campus as "mayhem." (Watch a student's recording of police responding to loud bangs )

"It was kind of scary," he said. "These two kids I guess had panicked and jumped out of the top story window and the one kid broke his ankle and the other girl was not in good shape just lying on the ground."

Madison Van Duyne said she and her classmates in a media writing class were on "lockdown" in their classrooms. They were huddled in the middle of the classroom, writing stories about the shootings and posting them online.

The university is updating its 26,000 students through e-mails, and an Internet webcam is broadcasting live pictures of the campus.

The shootings came three days after a bomb threat Friday forced the cancellation of classes in three buildings, WDBJ in Roanoke reported. Also, the 100,000-square-foot Torgersen Hall was evacuated April 2 after police received a written bomb threat, The Roanoke Times reported.

After the Monday shootings, students were instructed to stay indoors and away from windows, police at the university said.

"A gunman is loose on campus. Stay in buildings until further notice. Stay away from all windows," read a warning from the university.

"Virginia Tech has canceled all classes. Those on campus are asked to remain where they are, lock their doors and stay away from windows. Persons off campus are asked not to come to campus," a statement on the university Web site said.

yayyyyy! Thank God guns are legal!
The NRA should be abolished and guns should be illegal with a death penalty if u own one. period.

Aye, just made a WoW thread about this. I'll refrain from ranting in here. But it doesn't even surprise me anymore that these things keep happening in the US of A. Legislation has only a small part in this. I'll wager a case of beer that the guns used in this weren't "legal". Americans just like guns and they're almost as ubiquitous as lab rats.

EDIT: Christ...after reading the CNN article, even the news outlets themselves don't seem that surprised/shocked that these kind of seriously fucked up incidents keep happening.....

Guns dont kill people, people kill people. If you're gonna ban guns, ban knifes, fuck it, ban forks, i can stab some one with a fork. Ban glass, I stab people with broken glass! ban matches and lighters, I can set some one on fire with those! NO I GOT IT, BAN HANDS! That way I cant kill any one!

It wouldnt make a difference if guns were illegal, people will all ways find a way to kill some one, as long as they have hands to do it.

give me a fork i bet i could kill 5 kids in a cafeteria before people start to notice... and then i'll just throw spoons at the people surrounding me... and then just disappear into thin air... cuz i got it like that

There was a shooting here a couple weeks back, a dude killed his ex-girlfriend and popped himself, but it's nothin compared to this. Damn.

SKY NEWS: Witnesses said he was heavily armed and entered the college looking for his girlfriend... He reportedly lined up students and opened fire at them. He was said to be an Asian, in his mid-20s...

cell phone clip that captured the gun shots sounds

lets not get into a "guns should get illegal" b.s. convo. that just doesnt make since. if you ban them in one country you cant ban them in all the others and they will still make their way into countries where tehy are illegal. people with them will still have the upper hand over the peolpe who dont.

just look at the stats of the states with anti-gun laws against the states that dont. the ones with them have higher crime rates including armed robbery and murders with hand guns. think about that for a min.

a gun is a weapon. it needs to be picked up, loaded, aimed, and have its trigger pulled in order to kill. all of which has to be done by a person. key word there is person.

thats the gayest thing anyone has ever said. Youre stupid!

the point wasnt hwo many people could die from a fork the point was that it could be used as a weapon to kill.

if this guy didnt have 2 semi automatic hand guns and instead had two big ass hunting knives, people would still be in shock at how many people he killed with two knives. the number might not be 31 deaths but i bet there would still be a good amount dead

the really sad part is we will never know the real factors. even in columbine we dont know the real factors. all of the familys that were victims in columbine, even the parents of the shooters, have been under a court gag order for years. they want to speak out and tell parents the signs to look out for but cant. i heard a radio interview with a girl who was a best friend of one of the shooters of columbine and she swears up and down what made him snap was his medication. he was off it a few weeks before the incident and then was back on it just days before. even though he wanted to be off the meds more than anything. and he was taking common meds like zoloft

If only one of the students who came in contact with the killer had been armed many lives could have been saved. If there had been two or three students this would have been almost a certainty. The University and VA legislature are responsible for this tragedy because they ensured the campus was the human equivalent of a slaughterhouse.

The police cannot protect you even with two hours warning and despite the fact that they are actually on site and, presumably, seeking the killer.

What you have to realize is that killing someone with a fork is a lot harder not only physically but mentally. When you kill people with a gun all you do is pull a trigger and turn away, anyone who is un armed can't fuck with you. If your killing people with a fork(wtf?) its gonna be VERY bloody and gruesome and 2 people can easily over take you. I don't believe banning guns is a good idea but I can't believe people actually think that killing someone with a knife is even close to as easy as shooting someone.

Rest in peace!

Second; There are arguments for both sides of the story when it comes to guns and ability to own them.

In the end it's not about guns or any kind of weapon it's what society makes you that you decide to use them at your benefit. I don't want to be cocky or anything but there is a pattern here. These kind of shootings keep happening in USA pretty often. Yes it happened in germany and probably will happen somewhere else in Europe. But for some reason it's happening the most in USA.

There is a professor in sweden who is specialised about this matter and he claims that these events happen cause of revenge. And the massmurderes often sees violence in a romantic view, that he must be the warrior and uphold the honour he has lost.
