I always have those thoughts that the boarders and creating artificial boundaries between countries is becoming more and more silly as time goes.
When I want to travel across Europe it's all fine, I don't even see the boarders. I just can go wherever I please and it's fine, it works and is great and is intuitive as it should be - there are similar people there and all is fine. Yet when I cross the "boarder" I have to pay 2$ for a megabyte of data. Kind of ridiculous.

Ok but that leads me to the US/Canada thing. I think people don't even see or think how ridiculous it is when you're going there. When I go to the US or Canada I'm amazed at how hard they're trying to make to get there. It would take years to move there and they issue those ridiculous "temporary" work permits that are hard to prolong. I understand the need to protect your country from worthless people but sometimes it's just overdoing it. I think civilized countries with similar economic situations should be open for each other and more tied with each other. In a couple of years America and Canada will face negative supply/demand of qualified labor force, yet their immigration programs are ridiculous and attract barely anyone but uneducated trash (ok, far less so with Canada). You can go move your whole family to the US if your unemployed grandpa lives there yet an educated and experienced dude that digs the country can't. That is kind of off topic though.

In the UK our borders seem to be too open. I am all for immigration., but not when it harms the country. It lowers wages for unskilled workers. Which is fine if you run a company and are happy to employ people as cheaply as possible. But not so good if you are unskilled and looking for work. The benefits system is unsustainable too. If you came in to the UK to work and left your family at home in Poland, you could still claim benefits for them. Including child allowance. That is an EU directive, but rather ridiculous.

London is struggling. It is bursting at the seams. I'd be happy to spread some of London's economic wealth about the UK.

And... as with every capitalist country worldwide, the rich are getting richer, the poor poorer and the middle classes squeezed...!

That sucks a lot and yes, it's ridiculous. I believe it should be changed. I also thing there should be some kind of system to control the immigration. I think the US system is far worse though. People who want to really contribute to the society are not allowed in, yet you can take your whole unuseful family and live on welfare your whole life if any of your family members lives there. Maybe there should be some sort of international way of rating people by their value to the society - like, a country wouldn't be obliged to allow in a person who is not even trying in his own country.

I started the rant mostly because I'm just graduating, I'd like to live abroad for a while (working of course) and I totally dig Canadian livestyle, I met friends there and I enjoyed it a lot, I felt like at second home. I believe I'd contribute quite a lot to the society and while their immigration laws are still far better than American ones it's still much more to go through than it's worth.
And obviously you can marry someone there to move there.. which is kind of a work-around for most useless and uneducated people. Or make a family member marry someone there and you can take your whole family there. Ridiculous.
Canada at least have some programs that allow you to stay there if you've been working there for over a year.. altough first you have to go back to your country, fill a dozen of papers and wait for approx. 2 years...
While in the US there are no easy ways in other than having a family member there or winning a Green card in a fucking lottery, which is basically giving a green card to random people, lolz. I don't know any serious person who would go for it, only people with no long-term obligations like a serious job that are trying their luck.

I think boundaries and immigration programs are important. But some countries like the USA overdo it by a lot. In Canada, each province has its immigration programs and how many do I see not contributing to the economy yet using up all the possible social assistance programs they can benefit from. Not that I'm generalizing because not every immigrant does it, but there are who do. And immigration programs should be able to get all these people to work. I'm all for social programs, but not abusively, and especially not when you just got here and stay on it for years just because you can and because it probably gives you more $ than if you worked full time on a minimum wage job. I work my ass off, so should they. Rant finished. lol

Was my first day. We hadn't discussed money. Just found out it's about a 50% pay cut. I have gone from being rich to just about being able to make my money stretch. Ouch...!

Should just be for a year. But, a shock, none the less. There's no flexibility in the contract for a year. After that, it's back on the old money, or to find a different job. It's complicated and boring to explain. But that's the gist of it.
