Which language should I attempt to learn

I just dl'd Rosetta Stone. I doubt it works that well but fuck it I'll try it.

I'm thinking French. Spanish would probably be the best to learn considering all these damn anchor babies around there parts. My friend lives in Italy and I'm headed out there next summer so I guess Italian wouldn't be a bad choice. I'd like to learn Portuguese as well. I don't know which to do, I really like French though.

do you have links to the download?

thanks.

i always wanted to learn spanish but they never had the option in school. i therefore chose german. i would also like to recap over what the german i learned and eventually forgot after some years. i really enjoyed german and was very good at it too.

I dont get where Duke is coming from about Portuguese, its not that hard, and its more similar to Spanish than Italian. Also Duke what whole continant do they speak Spanish? If you mean South America then im afraid just as many people speak Portuguese as they do Spanish;

On a side note, i've been teaching my self Japanese over a period of years, admittedly its complex, but if you are just talking and listening instead of reading and writing, learn Romaji (Romanized Japanese). Im also interested in learning Dutch.

That's just cos of brazil. For the rest almost all countries in south and central America have Spanish as their first language.

You should learn Frisian, it's very popular in the US. Just kidding, it's actually a language and a word Duke made up.

Actually, for a native English speaker Frisian is probably the easier language to learn from scratch than Dutch is.

I know a lot of women that love Russian and other Slavic languages. Shit, 2 weeks ago the lady that was cutting my hair told me she want to learn Russian, and she's an uber Frenchy.

So? That doesnt make it any better. It just means a lot of people have an awful taste.

Seriously Russian is a disgusting language. I've narrowed it down to French, Portuguese or Spanish lol. I think I'm just going to do lvl 1 of each and then choose from there.

And people asking for links...you can pm and I'll point you in the right direction but there are a lot of links for each different language. For instance you'll dl the program and then you'll dl an iso of whatever language you choose. Then you'll have to mount the iso and use it like that. I'm sure you can find what you're looking for with google anyway.

There's beauty to be found in any language. Sure, some may not be appealing to the ear from the start, but that's cause some take getting used to more.

Anyway, I never understood the idea of learning a language for its practicality. Sure, knowing Spanish over French may be more useful in being able to communicate with more people, but so what? There's so much more that comes with learning a language. There's learning the culture, the surroundings, the little inner-workings of the play-on words and such. For example, I'm a huge fan of Godard. I'd learn French (studied it in high school but didn't continue, sadly enough) just so that I could watch his films without subtitles.

Yup, that's why I started learning Japanese. Otherwise I wouldn't have enough motivation.
People often tend to lack motivation at some point when they don't really like the language/culture they are learning.

Turkish is a language to consider. I always thought it was an ugly language but that was just the mangled Turkish of Turkish immigrants I had heard. It sounds nice and apparently it's quite a beautiful language when you understand the meaning of the words. Plus it has a fairly interesting history. Spoken in the Middle-East but originated near Mongolia.

Dutch, there's like 1 countries that speak it.

Dutch is the official language of Suriname. And doesn't the Belgian border speak alot of Dutch, and yes I know its "Flemish" not Dutch, but I know alot of Belgian and Dutch people on IRC, and they speak to each other extremely well in Dutch? Also isn't Afrikaans very very similar to Dutch?

I forgot, we can read Afrikaans quite well also :D

As above, but isn't that because alot of white settlers in South Africa were dutch?

Irish. there is like a 1/100th of a country that speak it. :)

Isn't it "Gaelic"?

no its Irish. Gaelic is what some Scots would speak right? there are similarities though i think.

Irish is a hard language to learn. we had to learn it in school.
