I was at this german faux paux restaurant droppin hoegaardens after finishing 2 finance finals when we find out that Showtime is hosting some sort of marketing/promotion whatever the fuck. In the end, the tab was on them, including happy hour drinks and appetizers, and all the free shit we got. I got a season 1 dexter dvd, a season 1 californication dvd (i gave to the waitress cause she wanted it), a californication poster, two showtime shopping bags, and a californication shirt...i'm rockin it right now. what else...i can't go home cause i'm too drunk to drive...i told my mom this and she doesn't like it..

Mmk, here is my piece on everything.
I am a 22 year old straight white man who believes in God, Christianity, and loosely, the Bible.
As that man, I have no problems with:
People older than me, people younger than me, people my exact age, gay people, other races, atheists, agnostics, other religious people, or whatever literature they believe in.

I do have problems with people who force their opinions on others and argue peoples' opinions with their own opinions, and deem them valid facts, without any evidence.
I realize there is no evidence to support Christianity or any religion at all, okay? I realize this.
I have my beliefs, I have my superstitions, and no matter how much you bash me for them, I will not bend my will to that of anyone on the fucking internet, and I will not apologize for any of my qualities or faults to anyone, ever. The day I bend my will to that of any of you guys is the day my shotgun goes down my throat, soon followed by the 7 1/2" slug.
You have other opinions, I recognize them, I respect them, they are yours to keep. I will not bash them, I will not try to belittle you as a person. Because I am secure with who I am and what I feel to be REAL life, so I have no right, no power, to judge you or your thoughts, just as you have no right or power to judge me or mine.

If you have a problem with me, then fuck yourself. If you disagree with my beliefs, great. That is your right, and we can still be e-friends and get along. I have no prejudice against anyone on this board, I actually am fond of 99% of the people on here, even the ones I ridicule, you all seem like good enough people, honestly.

I believe in God. I also avoid stepping on cracks in the sidewalk because I just don't like to do it. I avoid walking on grass, dirt, etc. and will take the long way around just to avoid those surfaces and stay on the sidewalk. I shave my entire body. I wash my hands well over 50 times a day. I take three showers a day. I listen to certain music and watch certain YouTube videos before basketball as motivation.

Now let me ask you, does my avoidance of cracks in the sidewalk harm you? Would my three showers a day make you no longer want to be my friend in real life? Would my habitual handwashing make you yell at me and try to make me feel like less of a person?
These are things I do, because they make me feel good. There is really no other reasoning for my doing them, I just enjoy doing these things and in a way, I believe in them, just as I believe in my religion. You don't lecture me against doing those other things because you don't give a fuck, you shouldn't give a fuck about me believing in anything else. You won't make me stop shaving my body, you won't make me stop believing in God. You are powerless in that sense and any efforts are futile and downright silly, so you can stop now.


[My post is not directed at any particular member, I thanked all posts that I thought had a valid point in their post and I'm not playing favorites. You're all entitled to your opinion and fuck whoever says different.]

That's where the respect comes from, if a person believes in something that does not harm another, yes it can be respected by putting yourself in their shoes and trying to see things where they're coming from. The reason you can't respect it is because of the inability to put yourself in another man's position, so all you are capable of doing is toleration

"Not harming" anybody else is not the only factor to decide on if the belief/thought/whatever should be respected or not, is it?

Lets say you are a good guy and you believe in god. You do a lot of things due to your belief in god/your religion. Now i will definitely respect you for being a good guy, no doubt. However, i will not respect your belief itself.

However, you can choose to have no part of the religious system that you were indoctrinated into. That's what I chose to do after realizing it was all bogus. I was taken to Hindu temples and Christian churches as a kid with the respective sides of my family. Both sects of society firmly believed in their faith with their own theories and stories. Obviously I understood early on that they both could not be right, however they could both be wrong, and they are, like any other religion. I went to a largely (but not strictly) Christian school where they made us recite the Lord's prayer every morning. I refused to and told them I didn't believe in, and was given detentions and suspensions for it until they realized that their efforts were futile and I wasn't weak-minded like every other kid in the school who believed in their bullshit.

Similar thing happened to me. I went to two a private Catholic school with the whole praying every morning before class and at the end of the day bullshit, even had special classes just for religion.

Once I found out Santi Claus wasn't real, that was it, I hated the word and everything in it. I stopped believing in everything, Easter bunny, the tooth fairy, the whole shabang. I thought well, if my parents can make up all this nonsense about magical creatures, surly "God" is just another one of their lies that they implanted into my head and made me believe. Which really, it was.

I stopped praying and going to religion classes. Got detention, suspended etc. Eventually they gave up and let me go to the library to play chess with the special kids lol. I was down with that.

It wasn't until later in life that I found out I was right. It's like when you first find out Santa is not real, you will do anything to defend him so you keep getting presents, but once you open your mind and realize that the facts are their compared to a story that a person has told you, as much as you hate it, you soon change your perspective.

Otherwise what you believe is up to you, I don't care, but when it interferes with policy that effects a whole country.. Thats when I get cranky at religion.

i feel exactly the same way. i have my beliefs, values etc but there's no way i would impose those onto other people or try and convert anyone etc... i will leave what people want to do up to themselves because i cannot control anyone but myself. it is entirely their decision what they do with their lives.

like casey mentioned before, forcing something upon someone is not the right way to go about it. but i am glad i was born into a religion, a culture and a place where i have found out who i am because it makes me who i am, i have my roots and a sense of belonging to a particular community.

casey has highlighted the negative aspects of religion a nd has always reiterated them. im not going to lie and say there's nothing bad about segregation and groups which contradict each other. its like kids in a playground or on a bigger scale, gangs for example.

but think about the good things that are involved with religion and rules/commandments or whatever that try and encourage people to live honest lifestyles. again, this is a decision. people can opt out if they want, its not forced like you cannot leave!! - if you feel you can live an honest good life without religion and belief in god and if it works for you - fair enough, that's your viewpoint.

some people will never understand the spiritual aspects that are involved. meditation, reassurance, encouragement, advice, stress relief etc that are concerned with it.

as flipmo said. each to their own. no-one is going to force anyone to do anything, so please stop imposing your beliefs onto us. let us decide what we want to do, that's all that is asked.

The definition of respect is broad and interpreted differently and the phrase "respecting a person's belief" can be interpreted differently. Based on your interpretation, you are right, based on mine, I am right. For example, I can respect martyrdom, in the sense that I respect the courage behind it, the belief that self-sacrifice is furthering some cause but I don't have to agree with it as something that should be undertaken. In this case martyrdom is not a belief per se but it still applies. So to me, belief and action go hand in hand. Behind the concept of respect, there's a sprinkle of compassion and acknowledgment. To you, it's more limited to respect as holding something in high esteem.

Okay, I was sober in my last post, too, as well as now...
I know that Casey doesn't believe in any religion, whatsoever, besides Prince as the messiah. But, I can respect it enough to leave it alone. There are different levels of respect, like S O F I said, and different levels of believing or not believing, as well as different levels of agreeing or disagreeing.

Nah, at work I counted once, and in an eight hour shift, I washed my hands 48 times. I wash my hands less at home, but still more than anyone I know. I consider my home to be less "germy" than other places, like my work. Not saying it's a dump or anything, just, unfamiliar. Therefore I wash the unfamiliarity off.
The three showers a day are, once when I wake up to make sure I don't fall back asleep, once after the gym/before work, and once before bed to help me sleep.
